Cambelt Change Frequency?

Postby shandy » Tue 07.05.2013, 19:26

What's the current opinion on how often with need to change the cambelt and ancilliary belts?

I've had my Elan seventeen years and always erred on the side of caution and had the belts done every 4 years
often having done negligible mileage.

My Elan's on 46,000 miles and i last had the belts done in May 2009 less than 5k ago. Can it safely go
another year or should i bite the bullet and get it done? Is their a reliable brittleness test for the belts? Cheers

I've had mine 19 years and its done 34K miles. I did work abroad for 7 of those 19 years. I am giving serious consideration to changing my
cam belt. I have even bought a new one with water pump, tensioner etc. I think perhaps they don't become too brittle with age.
Mind you I just changed the one on my Focus at 96K miles.
