Noisey Elan...

Started the Elan today,and noticed a squeeling coming from the lefta handside of the engine,around the water pump area also cam belt and alternator  its hard to tell where its coming from exactly,anybody got any ideas....

worn belt, loose belt, slipping belt, grit in belt, mouse caught in belt . . .  ;D

Check the tension of the PAS & alternator belt, if it 's not the belts possible it could be the alternator, has u`r car been of the road for a while?

I had a similar problem when the alternator seized. I fixed it (short term) by putting a spanner on the pulley bolt and freeing it off.

My spare alternator is still unfitted.<br><br>If it's a siezed alternator which is causing the screeching it's pretty obvious, so maybe your problem lies elsewhere?<br><br>John

Hmm,<br><br>I had this some time ago. It turned out to be the waterpump.... The way to check it is as follows:<br><br>Take a huge screwdriver.<br>Leave the engine running idle<br>Put the screwdriver at the top of the waterpump's housing and... Listen with your ear at the other end of the screwdriver.<br>You should hear an amplified (similar) sound. If that is the case: the waterpump is on its way out.... The ball bearings of it.<br>second trick is making sure the enigine is running hot, fans kicking in: the waterpump makes less noise through the screwdriver trick: sure it is the waterpump....<br><br><br>good luck,<br><br><br>wilco<br><br><br>PS: make sure your other ear is plugged with anti grenade plugs from military service ;D

A good trick I have used that my dad taught me was to take a water hose and run water on each of the different pulleys that a belt is going around and listen for any change in the "noise", when the "noise" goes away, you have found the source of the problem. This is much safer then placing your ear on a screw-driver and it works alot better.
