Rear Number Plate Cover/Surround - Fixing ?

Postby martin_bailey_1 » Sun 26.04.2009, 22:38

All,

Having had the car parked in the sun all afternoon, it would appear that the adhesive fixing the clear perspex cover to the black fibreglass rear number plate surround got a bit 'overheated' and started to sag.

I pulled off the clear cover and then removed the surround.

After cleaning up both parts, it's now time to put them back together. I've scoured the service notes, but unfortunately they don't really cover this, so I wondered if someone could please give me some advice...........

1. What's the best/correct material for bonding the clear cover to the surround, and where can I get it from?
(The sticky mess that I scraped off, looked like the remnants of some sort of double-sided adhesive sponge tape!)

2. Between the rear transom panel and the number plate surround, was a (somewhat perished) foam strip. Where's the best place to get a replacement (assuming that this is the correct fitting.)

3. I suspect that my surround wasn't correctly fitted, as it seemed to just be 'hanging' on 4 mounting screws along its top edge. The bottom of the surround wasn't attached at all and was just 'rattling' between the rear panel and the bumper. It looks like it should have some sort of fixing (perhaps some form of 'captive' nuts, with screws from inside the boot?) If this is the case, is it possible to get replacement fixings (and if so, where from?)

Many thanks,

Martin.

1) It depends on which surround you have, Is it a proper one, or the open style that someones put a screen on
2) South West Lotus do the seal
3) South West Lotus or any of the usual suspects

I believe it's a 'proper', original one :D

Cheers,

I have used foam tape all be it the 3M automotive product and it is fine, not all tapes are equal and some of the cheap ones are rubbish.
Lets not forget if you use sikaflex it will be a major job if you want/need to get it off.

Yep, it's a bu66er to remove!

I stuck mine on with a few small strips/blobs of sikaflex, then went round the whole thing with black silicone to seal it. Don't know about the foamy stuff - there wasn't anything like that on mine.
