Since I have no Owner's Manual and I was taught never to force anything, especially fiberglass, how do you open the compartment for storing the convertable top.

Open driver's door (on a RHD), at rear of door opening near door striker is a black handle -- pull it and lift cover. Make sure handle goes back in before you shut the door.
The handle in the same place on the passenger side is for the fuel filler cover.

On US models, there's a knob inside the right (passenger) door jam.
1. Unhook the top from the window frame.
2. Pull the front of the top towards the rear of the car and the rear of the top will lift off the lid.
3. Open the passenger door and at the same time, slightly push down on the lid while pulling the knob.
4. Lift the lid and fold the top into the compartment.

You wouldn't happen to be the proud new owner of Doc Fizzix's beautiful red elan that sold recently, would you? If yes, congrats and welcome! That's a sweet car - I drove (and nearly bought) it when Doc sold it the first time, a couple of years ago.
