Front end paint - Help

Postby RobL » Wed 14.04.2010, 09:27

Morning all.

For starters, I'm sure the only solution to this is a respray of the bonnet and most of the front end but I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on the cause.

The paint on the bonnet (black) originally started to fade in the centre and then this spread outwards across the whole lid. I would understand if it was the normal paint issues under sunlight but this looks much worse. It looks like someone has been at the car with sand paper. Could the heat from the engine bay may have caused the issue? Any thoughts?

Does sound like it was caused by the heat from the engine, which is strange as i`ve not heard anyone having the same problem.

Is the sound proofing under the bonnet ok?

are your heatshields in place on the exhaust manifold and turbo?

wonder if it`s possible to flatten off the bonnet with wet&dry and then respray with a clear coat :?

or just have the bonnet resprayed but obviously you need to know what caused the fade.

what about taking a photo?

Cheers Monty.

I'll try and sort out a photo.

As far as I can tell all appears to be in place under the bonnet. Until I can get a photo sorted, the problem area is almost an outline of the soundproofing underneath. I guessed it must be heat damage because the paint above the headlights is ok. There is a similar patch of rough paint about an inch wide running about 12 inchs along the top of the off side wing but the near side wing is fine.

I guess it may be possible that the bonnet has had a previous paint job that was done to a poor standard hence the trouble withstanding the heat but I can't find a record in the reciepts of any respray work.

That doesn`t sound like it`s caused by the heat from the engine then, (but there are oil cooler lines there) sounds like a respray maybe required :?

Maybe a trip to a local spray shop to get some advice :?
