Hood Tension Cables

Postby enndee » Sat 05.02.2011, 16:11

One of the crimped tags on the hood tension cables which is pop rivetted to the head rail end of the hood, broke a few months ago and although I was able to obtain replacement tags from the hood manufacturer I was unable to find anyone to crimp the new fitting to the cable - normal electrical crimping tools don't exert enough pressure to stop the tag pulling off. Anyway, a sailing friend has a mate who is a yacht mast rigger. He has some serious crimping tools so he removed the old tag and fitted the new one. However as soon as the hood was tensioned, the crimp held fast but the tag ring broke, again!!! Anyway, this guy is also a sports car enthusiast so he was more than pleased to put his engineering and rigging skills to good effect and came up with a solution using 2mm stainless steel wire which is looped and crimped and is MUCH stronger than using a crimp tag, a stainless steel nut and bolt rather than a pop rivet at the head rail end and a miniature stainless steel cable clamp for the other end.
All in all, a superior solution with no corrosion issues for the future.
I don't know how much of a problem the hood tension cables are, but the guy is willing to make up sets for Forum members. This will consist of a pair of cables with crimped loop, nuts and bolts and cable clamps - all in stainless steel, plus cable end finishers.
No idea of price at the moment but I would like to gauge interest in this before perhaps starting a group buy.
Please can members register their interest on here and if anyone knows what the stock replacement cables cost, that would be very helpful.
Cheers,
Neil
