Complete tosh in my view . Alfa was harking back to sixties Spyder with a long grille and the number plate on passenger side of the bumper. Personally I felt that this along with the rear lights and the hidden rear door handles help made the 156 such a lovely and distinctive design - I still think it is one of the best looking saloon cars ever and yes I did have one a few years ago.! Shame the design of the 159 was just a enlarged and ill proportioned version of 156.

think we've got crossed wires here....
like most cars...the designer/stylist does not indicate number plates.....when it goes to model stage...it has no number plates......most of the car shows have cars with no number plates....
all I was saying that generally cars have the similar front ends and you just stick it in the middle of the front bumper and all I was saying was that the styling of the front end of the alfa got in the way of the number plate.....whether its the spider or not.....hey the 60s spider was designed in italy by italians...who said it was designed to have a front plate anyway....
I like alfas.....just that front end was spoilt by the number plate......

It follows the curve of the bumper perfectly at these centres.

eheheh...
Italians do it better!! it is the same thinking we have about English designers! just a quick example: if you look in the boot lid of our cars, it seems really strange that the windscreen water bottle is so far from the place where it should be... I think that they really forgot it! don't say "the engine bay is so full..." they forgot it!

I'd say Lotus said: "this bottle contains a lot of fluid so is quite heavy, the M100 is already front heavy and rear light, it doesn't need to be in the front, so let's put the bottle in the boot."
