Replacment Roof Seals

Postby JonJon » Wed 16.10.2013, 14:58

Hi All,
Will both seats are now out and I'm well on the way to removing the carpet. Considering how much water was in the foot well every thing is look ok under there. The passenger seat runner is bit rusty but should clean up ok.

Now the Elan is a bit cleaner I can see where some of the wet stuff is getting in. Can anyone point me at a diagram of the roof? then I can identify the seals that I need. Being new to the Elan scene I have no idea what seal is what, the one that "goes over the whatsit and down the thingy" wont get me what I need. Any info on suppliers would be good too.

You can see the rust stain from the seat runner

The muck does come off and the carpet and it's in surprisingly good condition.

Thanks for your help Jon.

Basically none of the hood seals are available: they are all obsolete. Same applies to the door seal. HOWEVER, you can actually get them for free: if you buy a new hood for c£1500

But only a handful of these complete kits are available. :? :?

There are some of us trying to get new ones made (see another thread: viewtopic.php?f=85&t=22393) but this will be a difficult and long task, so watch this space.

The "A" post seals are however still available if you need them: see SJ Sports cars http://www.sjsportscars.co.uk

SJ Sports Cars, Paul Matty and SW Lotus are all good sources of new/copy items, and some stuff is still available from Lotus dealers: see the "after sales list" on Elan parts for sale section.

In the meantime, the adept use of Sikaflex, cling-film and artistic fingers seems to solve quite a few people's leaks.

Good luck and keep at it, but don't let "project creep " set in.

I hope that you are correct about 'everything being ok' re rust but the 'tub' is plastic/fibreglass so does not corrode however, when you have the carpets out check all the metalwork from behind the pedals along and below the door through to the rear, particularly check out the jacking point (stick a camera in the hole and take a pic); do this for both sides.

Then, if you're right, breath a sigh of relief, it's probably is a good idea to squirt some dimatrol or such like before you put the carpets back! If not then there are several threads on here - search 'outriggers'.

Good luck.

Looking at the water ingress that is evident :agree: that the above is a top tip.

Yep The sill's are fine; as is the area under the pedal box and passenger foot wall carpets. The rust you can see on the floor in the second photo is from the tails of spent rivets

Fredjohn,
Thanks for the info on the seals, who has the roof kits for sale? they sound expensive but I might just have to bite the bullet  As for the dreaded project creep, I've set myself a deadline of no later than June of next year. I want to debut it at the North Kent Lotus Club BBQ that's held in July. Looking at what I'm finding during the strip down I don't think that's un-realistic target.

As far as I can remember it is M100 hoods (http://www.m100hoods.co.uk) in East Anglia who have got the last ones. They only supply them with a new hood though. There may be other hood cos. that also have them: there are various threads on here (which I can't recall) which may help.
