Rear Window Replacement

Postby morciii » Sun 11.10.2015, 16:47

i'm going to give this a try over the winter months as i probably won't be using the Elan much. My rear screen is too far gone, i tried renovo as soon as i bought the car, it helped a little but the rear visibility is still very poor.

I found the how to guide on the wiki http://wikilec.9600.org/index.php/Rear_ ... eplacement

It seems straightforward enough, although time consuming. anyone know if this will do the trick? or am i as well just getting on straight of an MG http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MG-F-B-MGB-RO ... 43e2aadddc

Get a quote for sewing in the plastic screen from a sailmaker at Port Edgar. You may save yourself a lot of time and get a better end result

Just had mine done by an auto trimmer though the hood is not that good.
Russells at longbridge B'ham
I removed the hood material from the frame but left the header fixed because it would be difficult to refit in the same position.
The trimmer found it very difficult with the stiff header ( and heavy) but he managed it very well.
I would not have attempted it myself - good luck.
Now waiting the Revono it to proof the Mohair.

Now that would be a lot easier, was thinking either that or an upholsterer. i think i will remove the old window, and cut the new one to shape on my own first and see how i get on, and if i feel confident enough to tackle the job myself

I used Kelvin coach trimmers to do the rear window in Black beastie and some other stuff. Old blokes and think they have now shut down, retired and bought an MX5.

i did mine .

took the whole roof off and did it on a table in the back garden . that way i could screw it down to the table with the roof fully open and taught
Its a 2 person job .
I laid on my back on the table and passed the needle through to other side. with long nose pliers.
It wasn't too difficult just very time consuming .
I used tint green MGF thick rear screen and reused the original cotton holes . I also used much thicker cotton ( or what ever it was) this is what made it more difficult as the thread was thicker .

was a decent job though ..

I think it'd be nice if someone cleverer than me could design one that zips in and out!

Virtually impossible as there is not enough space for it to fit when the roof is down. ? :poke:

I was thinking about doing over the course of a weekend, or a couple of hours a day, and get my dad to help

Be sure to cut every stitch out individually . That way you can use the original holes without damaging them .
It is time consuming but quite rewarding .

I know that.

You know that.

And that's probably why Benky never managed it although he was talking to a few firms about it...

and tasteful interior upgrades...

With all that red you'd have thought he would have used the triangle from a Lotus switch in his Vauxhall Hazard light though....
