respray job

Postby negenelf » Wed 19.03.2008, 16:52

Hi.
i have some problems with the motorhood the varnish is losing its grip , so on many spots i see already blank paint , i went to look to repair it and the guy told me it would be 500 euro to respray the hood , he told me the price is that high because it is polyester... the same job for a normal car would been 200 euro he told me ,
so i want to know if its true that polyester cars are so much harder to respray then ordinary cars and if so howcome its so much more expensive
thx

I wouldn't have thought there should be such a difference in price? :?
200 euros sounds a bit too cheap to me. I wouldn't expect a quality job at that price. Think I would try elsewere.

Paint can shift on plastic cars ( however a good sprayer should know what he/she is doing) also if he/she has to take out blemishes or fill then a gelcoat has to be applied .also the sanding technique will be different than that a standard metal car.

i would take it to another garage and ask then "what they are thinking" and see if they mention fiberglass and its implications...

best of luck.

Best person to speak to is SurferPhil

If the Gel coat isn`t damaged/crazed then there shouldn`t be much difference in price and not much difference in prep and spraying :?

A gel coat has to be applied onto the fibre glass body otherwise you can't paint it. Well you can but it won' stick.

If you have a blemish that breaches the gel coat this will need repairing, If it is a crack quite often the cut a (small) v shaped groove in and fill this, then paint.
