Intermediate Seal with a blob of sikaflex on it

Postby tweetdriver63 » Tue 29.07.2008, 15:55

I posted this on my project thread, but I'll ask here as well, since this may get more views.

When installing a new A-Post seal this past weekend, I decided to use the sikaflex to touch up some areas on the other seals where the surface skin was getting rough. I was just putting a bit on, then smoothing it to a thin, smooth film using a latex-gloved finger. Problem is, I missed a spot. I had put a bead on one of my intermediate seals, in the groove where the window glass fits, and forgot to smooth it. Now I have a thick bead/blob of the stuff in there, and it causes a gap between the seal and the window glass.

Does anybody have any advice on how to remove that cured sikaflex from the intermediate seal without damaging it?

Here's the other thread where I posted a couple of pics:

Cut it back with a single sided razor blade/craft knife or similar

That's what I was thinking...very carefully, but I thought it best to wait, in case there's a better/easier way.

You could use Dremel with a small grinder head and carefully grind it off. Wear a dust mask to. This rubber dust goes everywhere ;-)

The best thing is a surgical scalpel with a new 11a blade. Swann Morton is my tool of the trade and will give you a clean precise cut.

I managed pretty well with an exacto knife. I found once I got a little cut going, most of the sikaflex will actually peel away from the seal. If it starts to pull at the seal, you just make another tiny cut (being careful only to be cutting the sikaflex, not the seal) and keep pulling.
