not a happy bunny

Postby smilerbaker » Thu 08.07.2010, 11:14

After what, 4 weeks? of ownership some idiot just reversed into the front of the elan, the bumper has a deepish crack in the fibreglass and the gelcoat is shattered in a couple of places, you can also now see the outline of a bracket on the bumper.

so what else should I expect? are there any deformables behind the front bumper? car still runs ok etc and nothing is leaking.

its going to be an insurance jobbie, so I need to know what else to look for before his company just says a bit of filler and a touch up pen

Cheers

the bumper has a plastic coating over its fiberglass support, the fibreglass will have been smashed to bits
then there is a fiberglass crash structure, euro spec , US spec has alloy honeycomb sat on top of a metal cross member , the crash structure is very strong if its fiberglass, i doubt the US ones as strong, and might have been pushed back into the waste gate,
the metal cross member is not that strong and might have bent, all depends where your car took the impact, as you can see the shape of the bracket you might have got lucky with the cross member,
the bracket for the bumper is mounted square on to the box section of the chassis,
have you got A/C, the rad might have been damaged , oil cooler , oil cooler housing , inter cooler and housing might have all took some impact,
its a can of worms you might open if you look behind the bumper
good look

garage took the car away at the start of the week, just called up with the cost

3000chf to fix, so nearly £2k fortunatly his insurance company have agreed to pay and I just sit back and wait for the car to come back.

But £2k for a bumper repair and repaint!!! apparently the paint is really expensive (metalic purple) but even so.

So if your ever driving in switzerland BE CAREFUL!!! lol
