Respray costs??

Postby giles.holland » Fri 24.02.2012, 01:12

Hi!

How much generally for a full body re spray?

I heard that it will be more expensive to have all the Panels taken off and spray individually, but how much for both?

- parts taken off to spray
And
- everything left on to spray as it is (like a normal car)

Cheers

Panels off 3~4k
As is 2k
Blow over (cheap but looks good briefly)....say 1k

These are just guesses.......will depend on the body condition and if youre keeping the same colour also fading, colour matching, blending and any damage or chipping

Best off seeking a good know body shop

As elanman says
but do ask how much you can save if you prep some of it yourself .. as in take rear lights , roof , and any easy parts off. It will make a difference in cost.

Hi...

I work at a BMW dealer in Hindhead, which has a BMW Bodyshop on site.

Now, I Know I am biased, but, honestly, the guys in there are top bananas... nothing ever leaves unless it is an immaculate job! If my painting needed doing I would use nobody else.

If you can give me a more detailed desciption of what needs doing and why (faded/chipped/cracked)... and a few photos, I will ask them to give a competitive quote...

... and if you went ahead, I could look after your baby while it was here !!

Hi Dave

This sounds good! I've got a quote of £2k to spray all panels properly IF I take as much off as I can and do some of the prep work myself. This includes having to put stuff back after.

It's good that Your from BMW cos I LOVE the red paint from a 1 series, do you know the code/name?

My car is a steal blue, but want a complete respray in a similar if not the same red as that 1 series Beamer ;-)

To do a "proper job" when changing the colour it is usually more expensive than painting the car in the same colour.
You have all the areas that would not normally be painted to consider, like inside the engine bay etc and to get at some of the areas is tricky to say the least and probably requires more parts to be removed than would be normal. There were always the exceptions, the classic Range Rover springs to mind as all the door shuts and the engine bay were black no matter what colour the car was, unfortunately that is not the case with the Elan so you may want to reconsider as steel blue to red is not that easy

As a radical alternative to re-painting, why not consider wrapping?

This could offer a route to unusual colours/finishes and would not effect the finish of the basic vehicle - see the following, as an intro:

http://solutions.3m.co.uk/wps/portal/3M ... leWrapping

I don't know anything about costs but - if my Elan needed a finish enhancement - I would certainly be investigating! (visualize matt black, day-glo green etc.....wow!!)

Apparently wrapping weighs less than painting - certainly expecting to wrap my race car and considering what might be involved if I buy one of the many Elans with peeling lacquer

Also, have read the buying guide, but still not sure I could handle a green one, with apologies to all owners of green ones, just not me

That colour is Crimson Red... or KARMESINROT... BMW paint code A61

I have got some numbers, but they are off the cuff, we will need pictures or preferably see the car if you wanted to go further...

A complete colour change, ie engine out, lights out, panels off, seals off, shuts, etc, etc, looking at about £5K to do properly.

A respray in same colour from scratch... about 2.5K-3K... so your quote above is not a million miles out...

Send me some photos and a detailed description of what needs doing, and I will nail down an estimate for you...

 DaveB

I had my M100 series one resprayed from Steel Blue to Calypso Red three years ago and it cost me £2400. They removed doors, boot and bonnet removed the flaking paint and recoloured all shuts plus pods, masked labels in the engine bay and did that too. Pleased with the results on my car but there is collateral trim to replace on the door cards as they got removes to get the skins off. You wouldn't think she was ever a different colour.
