Hi the roof on my 91 se is in not to bad condition & as a high day & holiday car not very often up. The problem I have is the mechanism is slack & I find I need about 6 hands to put the roof up or down ie the front part drops back down if I let go of if before lifting the back half then to open the storage lid I need to pull the release & lift the lid whlst holding the back of the roof up . I have tightened all the screws etc on the hood mech to no avail . I asume the belville washers on the moving parts are to offer some resistance but mine dont allthough they look okay . Any help please would be very appriciated Jonno

Just a quickie Jonno,
It's not relying on Belville washers ... it's more of an over centre principle for the front section and the back part does need holding up even when properly adjusted.
Search my posts, and Dave Pink's (dapinky) for pictures ... particularly the ones relating to the elastic webbing.

Hi Jonno,
I may not be fully understanding the issue with your roof mechanism, but as RayD said even with one with no issues it becomes a matter of developing "techniques" that become second nature - such as holding the back section up with your left forearm while the left hand is positioned to pull up the storage lid while the right hand pulls the release, all while standing between the car body and the open door which is bumping into your backside as it is weighted to close unless held open. Another pair of hands WOULD make it all easier.
