New roof, old seals etc

Postby madbilly » Sun 21.04.2013, 14:59

Hi all,
I've decided that rather than wait for a good condition second hand hood/frame/seals assembly to come available for the right price I'll probably just go and get a new roof and reuse my seals (they're reinforced with Sikaflex now anyway), tart the frame up, etc. However I do have a few concerns about this:
1. Does the front/header seal get destroyed in the process of removing the old hood, so will I need a new one?
2. Where can I get the extra bits I need in addition to the roof? (eg the webbing will need replacing, but what else should I have to do the job right?)

All help much appreciated.
Will

PS - if anyone DOES have a good condition second hand hood/frame/seals assembly available then please let me know (by good condition I mean no rips, tears, bits where the fabric is wearing through, no holes/splits in seals, minimal rust, clear rear screen, smooth operation, correct fit - basically, yes, I want the moon on a stick!).

Not very thorough, but this is from a post a few years ago:

Thanks for the link, I hadn't seen that before. I'll ask around a few fitting places and see what they say about the header seal as there do seem to be conflicting accounts.

Anyone got any pics of different colour hoods? Particularly blue or green on a silver car? Whilst I like the idea of being different I'm beginning to think I might be better off sticking with black - after all there are no green parts on the car apart from the wheel centres! And apart from silver paint and largely grey/black interior the only other colour is yellow.

So, any pics? Or links?

Maroon is often used on a silver car......surprised I can't see any pics. Or tan on a green car.

Hmmm, not too sure I'm keen on maroon. I spoke to a lady today about having a hood made and she sounded quite surprised at the idea of a green hood on a silver car!

Hi,
I think green only looks good on a green car, I once saw one on a white car it looked terrible. I have dark blue on white which I like and blue could look good with silver but my recomendation is stay away from green it totally ruined the E-Type Jag it was on.

Okay I've made a LOT of phone calls and have details on various hood fitters and makers in Gloucestershire and surrounding counties, I'll write up everything I've found when I've got more time.

Basically my choice comes down to Diane in Malvern (username weet, has posted here in the past) who can make a new roof and fit for ~£500.

Or (and you'll probably be surprised by this) Trim Technology repair kit which includes S2 roof, all roof seals (header, intermediate and falling (B) pillar) plus webbing, adaptor plates for fitting to SE, etc - everything you'll need - for £635+VAT. But then if you don't want to do it yourself you'll have to find someone to fit it, and only people I spoke to who really sounded like they were familiar with the kit were The Hood Guys who quoted £260+VAT for the hood only, £340+VAT for seals as well.

It turns out that the exclusive arrangement Trim Technology had with m100hoods.co.uk is no longer in place and they are selling kits directly again. However, they won't split kits so you can't get seals separately. Also there's no LEC discount this time, I did ask. (they also don't do fitting or refurbished frames anymore).

My dilemma is that I don't want a black roof and that's all Trim Tech have on the shelf, the lead time for a made to order one is longer than I can wait so I'll probably go to Diane in Malvern (very good value too from what I can work out), however I could do with replacing the seals, or at least having a spare header seal as an insurance againt my existing one getting shredded in the removal process.

So, would anyone like a new black S2 roof but they're not bothered about the seals? If so then we can split a kit from Trim Technology, if not I'll just have to get even handier with the Sikaflex. OR, does anyone have a spare header seal they'd be willing to part with for a reasonable price if I do end up in need of one?

Please let me know asap if you're interested, I need to get this sorted this week.

Cheers,
Will

I read your last post with interest especially the bit about Trim Technology still having M100 repair kits. I note that the post was back in May, did you go ahead and get a kit from Trim? Was the price as per your post and did you fit it yourself?

I'm looking to replacing my hood with a standard black one including the seals so this may be an option.

Any update your your situation would be appreciated .

Thanks.

Hi Tim,
No, I didn't purchase the Trim Tech hood because I didn't have time to fit it myself and couldn't afford the full kit and fitting. If you want black then they may well have one in stock, they did when I spoke to them, but they can do other colours to order.
There's another topic discussing this too, started by me, so the duplication is my fault!
