I recently purchased an M100(my 3rd - previous 2 gone) -- the canvas/soft top on this one has a couple of double straps that run front-to-back and appear to retain the top frame rails that "rotate" so that it can fold down. The top on this car was rarely used and is in great shape except for these straps that hang overhead of the driver and passenger unless you "tuck" them in somewhere. They appear to be necessary, but I'm wondering if they should be ELASTIC -- now they're just "limp". Not a major problem as I usually drive it with the top down, but I'd like to make it correct. Any suggestions?
As a sidebar, I am also incorporating my pre-emptive cure for the "TOP RIP" syndrome caused by the design flaw in the top frame that causes it to wear and eventually cut the top itself(see pic above): on the inside of the top, I use a fabric adhesive to glue a couple of strips of "industrial" strength textile fabric(seat belt material would also work as well) where the top frame contacts the inside of the top, giving it much more strength to combat the frame attacks; it if wears out, just peel off and replace -- much cheaper than a new top. I usually spray with 100% pure silicone to combat friction just for good measure.

Hi, Yes both the straps that run front to back are meant to be made of elastic. They pull the hoops that span from side to side to the right position, when you raise the roof. They can be replaced with the roof in place. You need to drill out the rivets that hold it in place on the front of the roof and also on the hoops. Then replace and re-rivet.
With regard to the cutting of roof material, through the poor design of the roof structure, it is possible to re-engineer it so that this doesn't happen. But it involves fabricating new side bars that hold the roof together.
Regards
Chris

Thanks, Chris -- I'll try to source. Use Scotch 80 contact cement(high temp) instead of regular stuff to glue in place.

My straps also need replacing. Can you let me know if/where you were able to source new straps?
Thanks

Mine have also lost their elasticity. I would assume any decent haberdashers would have some wide elastic so will try there first.
