Shower cap

Postby Patton » Thu 15.08.2013, 21:31

Hi , is there a good fitting waterproof shower cap for the elan as I am sick of having to bail the car out after heavy rain when parked up overnight or when at work
Thanks

AB Motorsports used to produce one tailor-made for the Elan. This attached to the bodywork with suckers.
The company seems to have disappeared though.

Classic Additions make a range of different sizes & the smallest fits the Elan nicely. It has elasticated pockets for the mirrors & elastic straps to hold it around the front & rear. It is a lot cheaper than the AB one & I believe it is currently available.

I've had one of these for a few years now and I've been very pleased with it. The quality is really good, which is important as you would have to be extremely ham fisted to tear it. The size needed for the M100 is the XS. The only slight criticism I can level at this cover is that the mirror pockets, being elasticated fabric, take much longer to dry out than the cover itself.

I'm fairly sure there is an LEC discount from Classic Additions on these, but I'm not sure what the discount now is (LEC member "BFG in the BRG" negotiated this). If you ring Classic Additions to order one and mention LEC, I think they know about the discount and will price accordingly.

The last time I looked they were a little over £40 before discount.

Well I must say that I am very pleased and relieved that the cape has peformed well this past week. I believe it to be AB one with mirror straps and suckers, it came with Dave T's car.
We have had some very wet and windy conditions this past week and as the garage is being extended I am not able to get the Elan inside. A couple of times I have looked outside in the morning expecting to see the cape torn off, but no it has hardly moved.
If you are considering getting hold of a cape I would certainly recommend one of these.

I don't know for sure how well this would work, but Peter Stevens designed the Elan and (I believe) the hard top for the MGF/TF, and I've heard that the MGF hard-top will fit the Elan with a few minor modifications. Therefore it may be worth a punt.

Hahaha, good spot! Have to admit I didn't see that!
However, due to the shape the cutouts round the mirror should be in the right place, and I'm sure some suckers or loops could easily be added to make it a viable proposition.

My classic additions cape did not really survive a scottish winter. Despite spending 80% of the time under a secondary full cover, a few days of high winds were enough to tear it where the elastic meets the hood. I repaired it but the hood itself then tore at the repair. Probably fine in a sheltered street or drive but if you live in an area like I do with regular high winds, its not strong enough. You could reinforce that point before the event.

my AB cape was always doubled over the windscreen whenever the wind blew, the foolish idea that suckers will stick to the bodywork made this a fail, despite it costing quite a few quid. It was quite good except for that.

I find if I put a long bungee over the rear deck the Classic Addition cape is a lot more secure.

I've had one for about a year, my Elan is on the drive and during the summer I have found it brilliant, with a couple of exceptions, a) the elastic straps have stretched big time so have had to tie a knot in them and b) as soon as it rains I get black streaks coming down the bodywork which does eventually wash off but stains quite a bit. On top of that, I have been leaving the windows down about half an inch to let air circulate, but having opened it up today (as battery went flat due to alarm drain) I found mildew and condensation all around the interior (smells like your football/rugby kit when you were a kid and left it in your bag a few days! )

Haven't got a garage and would be grateful of any ideas how to stop the condensation, would a full cover help?

I'm going to have to try this, the back of mine is billowing in the wind today and I just caught the neighbour's cat underneath it!
