Any touch up paint avail for NMY?

Postby lotos » Wed 23.04.2014, 18:30

I've got a few tiny chips that I'd like to fill with some touch up paint. Has anyone found some for Norfolk Mustard Yellow?

I've always used SJS in the past. About £8 - £9 from memory. Not sure if they will post across the water though

SJ Sportscars do touch-up sticks, I bought a Calypso red but haven't used it yet.

A few years ago a local Car Quest store had a paint section where I got some touch up paint for an MGB GT that had been painted with a non stock color before I bought it. They put a camera to the car body (visualize a camera with a ~4 inch rubber accordion section on the front which seals up to the car body). The camera is then hooked up to their computer program which produces a paint mix code. The result was a bottle of touch up paint that was an absolutely perfect match.

I'm glad you asked this question because it prompted me to make some phone calls as I could also use some touch up paint for my Elan. The company that had the paint section in the Car Quest store is National Coatings & Supplies http://nationalcoatingsandsupplies.com/index.php

They are no longer in the Car Quest but have their own location locally - I just called them and they confirmed they still perform that service. I asked him if their other national locations do the same - he said he believed they would but could not guarantee it. I see on their website they have four Colorado locations.

If you have O'Reilly's Auto Parts where you live, they should be able to make you touch-up paint. The one here was very helpful. They found the codes in their books and made me a bottle of Calypso Red that is spot-on, and very inexpensive.

Unfortunately, NYM isn't in any current US paint books. The original codes from Lotus for Dupont and ICI are no longer useful as was bought out by another company and Dupont has changed paints so many times they don't have a way to cross the old number with a new formulation.

I used the fuel door on mine to have the paint custom mixed. If they would have put enough paint over the white sealer (more color coats), the color would have been perfect. Instead, they stopped when it looked like a modern Ford Mustang Yellow. (3 coats) It is a very nice, bright and smooth job. Just not the right color.

I spent almost a year with support from Dupont tech trying to figure out why my car came out the wrong color and they showed me very interesting samples of the color at each coat, or layers, and the "mustard" tone didn't start to be obvious until the 5th coat. After the 6th, the color didn't change anymore and looked to be perfect. My issue is horrible under shop lighting. In the bright sun, you can see the correct hue but it still looks to be too bright.

Maybe, this year, I can afford to get another shop to scuff the car and finish the paint process.

I don't believe LEMON was ever a description for NMY. Early Baby Elans were "lemon".

Lotus code for NMY is A64 for ICI and B05 for Dupont.

Oy vey.. for touch up paint I am less worried but I do have a rear light panel to paint at some point. I remember someone else having trouble with NMY years ago. And I was thinking that 20 years of UV would change the color a bit as well, even if the color was in the books.
