Could this be useful to someone ...
My foam bonnet insulation was a bit awful after all those years, I decided to replace it with a modern product : adhesive 6 mm foam with reinforced ( some fiberglass) aluminium barrier .
The main reason for changing was some polyester cracking ('overheating') at the hot locations, especially the bonnet frame upon the turbo : as a result my bonnet is twisted at the right pod angle.
I have no idea if the new alu reflective layer can have conséquences on the engine or controls because of heat reflections, so i pay attention each time i use the car. I did not face any trouble during the Ypres Lotus Day (while engine running to the ruptor sometimes. I did not notice any change at the thermostat gauge).
I noticed …
-1° that the original foam is absolutely not fireproof
-2° there is an aluminium layer under the foam, for shielding but likely also to avoid static electricity
I took off the foam (it was sticked with contact glue on the alu shield) , but let the alu shield in place.
I improved the shielding path (pict 2) to the both hinges using adhesive copper upon the alu layer after cleaning and sanding it (the copper glue is conductive … I use this excellent product to shield electric guitars).
I also doubled the thickness of the new insulation at the turbo location (picture 3).
I did not make any template, the product is easy to cut with scissors when working, the main panel was made by 4 bands and the rest with ‘’pieces on request’’.
Finishing (edges…) is locally made using standard aluminium adhesive tape.
