Should you want to change you windcreen wipers or simply clean the windscreen without them get in the way, here is the way to do so :
Did you ever notice the two tiny holes that are close to the hinge?
They are there to enable a metal rod to block the system in the raised position, once you have pulled the arm.
But let's see it, pictures speak more than words...

useful information thanks.
sadly my issue with the wipers is not keeping them up, is the fact they barely leave the glass not leaving much room for moving a hand around (or putting in some masking tape)

Sorry but I do not understand your issue. Why are you referring to masking tape? For some paint job on the bonnet?
Having the windscreen raised is useful for removing them by the way. I found this tip when I wanted to remove an arm and replace it by a NOS one.

Or you can replace both of them completly with some modern ones from a Vauxhall (exact same fitting) , stronger spring for better clearing and can be raised right up for cleaning the glass. Couple of £ from any Scrapyard.

more of a paint job on the whole car
the fact they barely move up just makes it a pain to wash the windcreen as well. but nothing worth a couple of £ on a scrapyard
