Please Help!!
I am the proud owner (for the last 18months) of a 1991 Elan SE Turbo.
to which a BBR Phase one conversion had been added (together with uprated brakes).
My problem is that, when the car was taken for its last MOT (in Sept 07) it failed due to high emissions, it then passed when a small"box of BBR tricks" was removed (small plastic box, resistor inside, 2 wires in, 2 out)
I now want to add a Mountain chip to the car and after reading the literature (and the warnings) I need to know if there are any other BBR modifications to take off??
Can anyone help?????

mmmm BBR is an unknown quantity to me ......but IIRC its been taken off when adding the chip
stick the everest chip in and take off the BBR and then its a case of tinkering with your CO2 pot if needed......
the everst chip is designed to run better and with less CO2 emission...
I’m normally not a praying man, but if you’re up there, please save me, Superman.

BBR should make no difference to the emissions at idle for the MOT`s

and an adjustment of the CO should off been sufficient.
Just wondering did the MOT tester think it had a Cat fitted which is only on the S2

which the emissions are more strict

I think the FCD (BBR box) fudges the MAP sensor (even at idle) so it probably would affect the reading but should, as Monty says, be adjustable by the CO pot.
Your best bet is to get shot of the BBR though as the Everest is a much better engineered device. Don't forget you'll have to remove the MBC as well.

The BBR mod has 2 parts. The plastic box with wires is the Fuel cut defeater which stops the ECU programmed fuel cut coming in if overboost is detected, as the car runs rich at overboost that may be why you had an MoT failure. The bit you still need to sort if you want to fit an everest chip (totally and absolutely recomended) is the Manual Boost Control as Geaff has alluded to. If you look behind the air filter trash can there is a clear resin topped thingy, this is the boost solenoid valve which controle boost and is operated by the ECU. The BBR conversion disconnects this and although the rubber pipes might still be connected they are not going anywhere. 2 of the rubber pipes will be joined witha small plastic piece this is what allows the increased boost by bleeding pressure from the wastegate side of the turbo. If you reconnect the pipes to the boost solenoid valve as lotusintended and ensure the plastic box with wires is disconnected you are good to fit the chip.

Actually 3
There will - or should be - a round aluminium plug with a, cough, 'calibrated' hole in the centre of it. It is inserted in one of the hose's Nige talks about, usually the one from the BSV to Air filter.
You need to find & remove it or replace the pipes if unsure.

Gareth,
If you want any pointers (if I can give them) pop round and I'll take a look.
You have mail regarding Light Motor Refurb Kits too!
Thanks

I don't think there is an external way to check the prom id.
You'll need a laptop, an elanscan cable, and elanscan.
PM geoffsmith for the cable, and once you've got that you can download elanscan. I'm sure Geoff will be along soon to post up the download link.

if you have the VIN of your car, I'd bet Alan can verify it as the PROM he'd expect and send you the proper chip. it's either a non-Federal SE or S2 and that alone should be enough to tell the chip . . .

well, "SE" (non-cat confirms SE) is all you need to know to order the chip from the chip website
Alan = ESM = chip guru
Geoff = ElanScan cable guy

Aluminium or plastic we're talking about the same thing Dee, (I've seen a couple of plastic inserts used on a variety of cars) this carefully 'calibrated' piece is the MBC in the BBR conversion. It's in the line from the wastegate capsule (as it has to bleed pressure from the wastegate capsule back to atmosphere) usually, as you say, back to the airbox. The BSV serves no purpose in controlling boost in the BBR as the constant bleed from the insert does this. Repalcing the pipes is a good call as if the BBR has been fitted fro any time and the original pipes have been left open there could well be all sorts of crud in there.
