When I bought my Elan SE last year, it had the Everest chip already fitted. I initially removed the chip to "save the engine" and keep insurance down. However, after 3-4 months I put it back with the acquired knowledge that the engine was pretty bullet proof and it didn't actually make any difference to the insurance anyway.

The extra performance is definitely noticeable, it does not make it less tractable and the car remains a pleasure to drive, without compromising the engine protection features programmed into the ECU. BUT I would suggest you make sure you have either upgraded your brakes with Hi-spec/Wilwood/AP (as wallet determines) or ensure your stock brakes are in full working order with a decent set of pads on them.

Would definitely recommend the Everest chip: love the performance it gives but you do need to be sure your engine is basically sound and running well.

I had my engine compression tested before i started work, on the basis if it came out good it was worth going the whole hog. At 127k every cylinder was within 1-2psi of target. And i dont think it was well cared for over 50% of those miles. Its at your own risk as it can spell the end for an already overstressed block but it cost £50 and set my mind at ease.

Just fitted new calipers on the rear for mot with green stuff pads,what sort of psi should I be looking for on a compression test.

The rears don't do a great deal. Fronts do most of the dynamic braking.
Add Vectra V6 calipers /Subaru Impreza discs as another alternative to the standard front brakes. You'll need shims for the calipers & sleeves for the discs & also need to re-drill them for 4-holes. A lot cheaper than HiSpecs with similar performance.

Keep up at the front Neil†. I posted the new ESM link 5 days before you and I was just pointing out that the link to MY Appee site didn't work either - at least ESM's Appee page just redirected people to his new site.

Maybe I'm just a real thickie - but I don't quite understand all the stuff about V4 and V5 on the shop section of the ElanChips site....

Is the V5 only to do with the switcher module? Or is it a general improvement on the V4. In which case, can you just buy the V5 or do you have to buy the V4 and an upgrade to V5??

I looked at it the other day and was left scratching my head - came back to it today, I'm still just as confused by it!

You've pretty much got it - V4 is a single programme plug-n-play jobbie. Open the ECU once, fit it, re-seal and forget.
V5 is the 16 programme switcher add-on.
You have to have the original board, but then it's another board on top of that with a chip that contains 16 programmes and a switcher to select between them. It only requires opening up the ECU case once more to fit it, but I had an early one which needed a slight modification to the case.
In practice I don't tend to switch between them much, but it's nice to know that I could if I needed to (like if my O2 sensor dies or something).
