If your air conditioning doesn't work why not just remove the compressor to get to the dip stick fixing then it's easy, I don't refit it makes working on the engine a lot easier but you will need to get a belt for a non air con car also makes the car lighter.

I may get around to fixing it at some point. The turbo has been taking all my time and effort. The compressor is at the back isn't it??

The compressor is in front of the dip stick fixing nut which is making it hard to get at, the only way i could tighten it was to remove the compressor.

Started my car yesterday and there was a huge cloud of smoke and once it cleared I spotted the alternator belt was snapped. Ironic as I was getting it out of storage to fit a new alternator belt! How can I check if it is seized? and how did you find space to hit it with a hammer

I know this was years ago for you but hoping you can still help...

This happened to me about ten years ago when the car hadn’t been started for a month or two over winter.
From underneath, I think, I got a ring spanner on the pulley retaining nut on the end of the alternator shaft and could turn it (clockwise!). I felt that the shaft was not turning freely but it was turning. I dosed it with a lot of WD40 and kept turning until it moved freely, cleaned things up, fitted a new belt and the alternator still works 50,000 miles later (although I do make a point of running the engine up to temperature every fortnight during winter hibernation).
Let’s hope you’re as lucky!
John
PS: no hammers were involved in this exercise.

Hi All... just about to send the turbo off for a refurb having pulled out the engine but I can't shift the wastegate manifold off the turbo. I've released the 3 studs (2 with nuts off and 1 stud sheared... 2 out of 3 not bad I suppose) but it still will not move. I've used loads of penetrant and heat (not a huge amount of heat..only got a small blow torch!)..what's the trick here please.. ta Mike.

Errr... There are 4 studs with nuts to undo, here's mine after separation:

Good luck getting to the 4th one!

True! M100’s and old lads do need a lot of light.
I just installed 20 professional LED tubes in my garage to try to keep up with aeging

The nuts are designed not to come undone so the stud will either come out or shear.
