I have completed a little project that I have wanted to do for a long time. The standard airbox always seemed inefficient in its design, with most of the air being drawn through a small proportion of the filter. So using the information that Marie put on here regarding the Honda Civic airbox being about the right size I jumped in and brought one to experiment with. Sure it fits in place well and has a cross flow design.
So I had various things to sort out:
1. A new inlet adapter for the turbo to accept the thicker pipe diameter
2. Mounting the airbox somehow
3. Creating a new inlet pipe
4. Working out how to plumb in the air sensor
I measured many times and came up with a design for the inlet, 3D printed it to make sure it would fit before having it machined
The airbox will sit on some aluminium plates that I have designed, partially using the existing chassis mounting points and extending a chassis bolt
I created a wooden buck for a new pipe, and created it in Carbon Fibre
This was a 3D printed boss
After initial testing I can report back that there a dramatic improvement in Turbo response and spool up, so much so that on cold days It will hit the boost limit.... So I will have to look at that. The intake sound, in my ears is much better.
