Question: does the elan need timer?

Not sure what u mean, but the ECM will restrict boost when engine is cold or to hot

If it needed a turbo timer, then Lotus might of thought about putting one on. There are plenty high mileage Elans that have not had one fitted and do not need a new turbo. As a precaution, and also a lot cheaper, drive a little gentler and keep off the boost if you are near your destination!

Personally I would not waste my money on one.

This is NOT NECESSARY with the Lotus. In order to help protect the lubricant in the turbocharger bearings from the effect of heat soak after the engine has stopped,a water feed and return system is provided,and connected between the thermostat housing and the radiator by-pass. Water circulation around the bearings continue after engine swithch off, by thermo-syphon action and reduces the possibility of carbonisation of the oil in the turbocharger.
