Apologies just noticed this, I've probably answered this in another thread already but this is an option which I'll be getting pricing on over the next couple of days. I'm currently also looking at the cost of a turbo upgrade as whilst its off and knackered it would be the perfect time and this has been in the back of my mind for a few months already.

Looking at the previous posts and photographic evidence from Vi11ain I think a 2nd opinion from Turbo Developments is in order. Could save you a LOT of dosh.

There seems to be a big difference in price between the £480 you have been quoted G and the shiny new one on the first page for £180? And it seems as Im reading it Muley was quoted £380 from the same place? A&M

Midland Turbo were extracting the urine somewhat I thought, and it seemed as though they didn't want the business.

Gave Turbo Developments a call and got the same £380 quote for the refurb. On asking the hybrid question I was quoted £150 for the bigger T-bird compressor and machining the Compressor Housing. I'm having them collect it from work on Monday as I missed the cut-off for collection today. With a bit of luck they will be more interested than Midland turbo were.

I've had exactly the same impression from them in the past.

Are you going for this option? Does it have any advantages over the standard setup or is it identical in operation?

With everything else as stock it should be the same although as the turbo itself can boost higher it shouldn't be working as hard. Upgrading the map sensor, injectors and either custom ECU, MBC or EBC should allow upto around 1.4Bar from what I have read.

Please find attached set of instructions for removal of manifold, strip of IHI turbo, re-build the lot and stick it back in the car.

Total cost = £30

(plus replacing any broken studs/bolts)

Elan IHI Turbo Rebuild.pdf

I know it's a big file - but it's comprehensive!

and, no, before you ask, It isn't in the Wiki! (I tried to add it, but it wouldn't have the pictures and I have spent quite enough time doing it as a .pdf document to be bothered at the moment - if anyone else wants to add it to the Wiki - feel free - otherwise I'll try and do it when I get round to it - but don't hold your breath!)
You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

Just the one now, but this one's mine! - and it will be finished eventually..... - but also temporary custodian of a project until it is finished enough for Angie to drive it

Decided to have a look at the turbo today and I'm not to sure on the amount of play on the compressor core.

I can put a finger on each end and I get slight play, I'm just wondering if to overhaul the turbo?

Another point to mention, I'm currently changing the head gasket so the head's off.

The car was using oil, but I don't know where from (So it could be the turbo)

Any ideas on overhaul?

Next question...

How loose is the waste gate flap meant to be?

Mines really really wobbly in the fully open position.

I've got 11 turbo/exhaust sheared studs, some you win, some you lose.... and then there's me...

I'm asking myself the same question...

I think it's something to do with keeping your enemies closer...

More importantly can anyone say how loose the waste gate flap that covers the the aperture is?

I'll try and explain, with the turbo waste gate actuator disconnected, open the waste gate valve, this is when the valve is lose in it's mounting. It will move back and forth within it's circlip mount.

How loose is a bit subjective, when I ported Peck's is was quite loose but seemed to sit over the port correctly and was not going to fall off.
One thing I did notice and that was wear due to fretting on the pin and hole that connects the lever to the actuator which may be part of the cause of sticking wastegate.
End float on the impellers is the critical area there will be a slight float on the shaft, did not measure it but from the feel of it the one I did here seemed fine and that was from past experience working with tubos both small and very large on 9000000 cc 2500 hp engines (not a typo)
If you have broken studs they can be tricky to get out and if you need them removed from the snail (exhaust end) I am happy to do it for you and port the wastegate at the same time.
I did the last ones on the milling machine by drilling the stud with a small drill and then opening the hole up with a small end mill till I could just see the threads and then colapsed the the bits in and removed them I also refaced the flanges for the manifold and exhaust.
I also made up some new stainless studs and supplied copper coated nuts which should reduce the chances of sheared studs in the future.

Here's a quick vid. (Click the picture)

Your first sentence sums it up, seems quite loose, sits ok

Many thanks for the offer on the studs, my mission today is to remove the studs and the down pipe... an easy job I think not. I may be back in contact.

As you have a large amount of stud sticking out they may not be too bad, the one I did had some of the studs shear off flush, those that were sticking out like yours I mig welded a 10mm nut on them flush with the casing, the heat generated from the welding helped get them out, the others were a right pain.

Three out, and the long one has sheared again, now it's 1 cm long, just gonna drill it out.

All four on the turbo mount are now out, they were barsterds

So the exhaust after that...
