I would really like to see how things look with a normal ball/spring mbc pushing 15+ psi (will have to log IATs and find when the turbo starts making heat not power) and a voltage clamp on the MAP so we don't get the BANG and then me sheepishly looking in the mirror for motor bits out the back. Quite unnerving, that.

Speaking of high IAT's, I was looking at the front of mine today with the bumper and shell of it. Sure does look like plenty of
room for a larger intercooler up there, the stock one is just so tiny..

As far as the duel port wastegate, the reason I plan on using it is so I can use one of the better boost controllers out there. Like

or

I have both, not sure what one I'll use yet.

Esm sight list Everest @ .9 that is why I got 13.6 lb. boost
Elysium listed at .95 and should produce 14+ lb. boost or another 6 hp.

Steve just the driver and loving it.

Looking at that I fancy taking my manifold off and getting it coated and getting the manifold worked on - Fair play. Looks like you have got some positive results on that one!

Steve, we use that one on our friend's Volvo with a big turbo. Digital boost control is niiiiiiice. Gear dependent boost control is very nice as well....poor man's traction control

Porting the turbine housing and manifold is completely worth it. For what we spent on the ceramic coating for all 3 pieces ($375 shipped both ways) the ~400*F reduction in component temperatures is certainly worth the price of admission as well.

I wish I had taken some more pictures of the manifold and turbine. There is a lot of room for improvement inside the manifold, you just need a long shank burr to get at everything.

eek, triple post!

I was working on this earlier. This is one of the better runs before we did anything to the turbo/downpipe/manifold (the pink runs) laid over the new best run.

At max rpm, we are making 18whp over the stock setup, and 14lb-ft as well. In the midrange, from 3500-4000 we are making 4-14lb-ft more to the wheels, despite spool happening slightly later with the new config (new pulls were done in 3rd gear old pulls in 4th gear....next time we will re-baseline in 4th gear) and running less total boost. You can tell the system flows much better because the high rpm power doesn't drop off at 6000rpm, it keeps pulling.

From the jumpy pink MAP curve, you can see the turbine and wastegate are having to work much less hard on the blue plot than before. The sine wave action is much more gradual in the new configuration. This is a good thing.

Auto cross -w- new Fed. down pipe. :-D
Observations: quick spool and full boost at low rpm means power to the
wheels in short bursts.

Example: Skid pad (circle of cones) I can literally maintain .5 to 1 bar boost
in spurts without shutting down boost to -0- in the circle.
Car reacts more like a v-6 or v-8.
I can no longer count seconds for the boost to kick in.
Their is no time to look at rpm then boost gauge to watch it rise.
You have already missed it. Pay attention to what's ahead.
1st gear boost. that too.

Will be further testing performance on track day Feb. to March.

Steve, I'm infatuated with your engine bay...

I hope a product/group buy comes out of this.

Oh, and is that a Baxter pharmaceuticals box I see peeking through in one of your pictures? My dad was an engineer for Baxter from the late 80's until about 6 or 7 years ago, so we had a lot of those boxes around the house. :-D

that is a baxter box, haha, good eye.

Steve had the HPDE/track days at VIR this weekend, I will let him weigh in on the car's current level of performance.

Hi.. I'm just wondering if there are any legal implications if I show this pic to my local exhaust guru and get them to make me something similar? Shipping from the US to here is going to be too expensive to entertain but I feel like I need to get rid of the pre cat lump.... and would like something similar to this.

Just wondering about the coating that was mentioned?? is this available in the Uk or Middle East? sounds like it's just what I need??!! Summer months normally render this car to the garage as it gets too hot to drive

Any advice appreciated

Wayne,

I do not have any problems with that, BUT, be forewarned that the downpipe in the picture did not fit, especially around the water outlet pipe to the left of the turbocharger.

if your guy is good with fab, have him trace the stock gaskets from the upper and lower portions to make flanges, and get creative with the piping so that it fits in your engine bay. We use 1.5" pipe and 2.25" pipe for our version in Steve's car.

The coating is proprietary to Swain Tech, http://www.swaintech.com/store.asp?pid=10969, although I would imagine you can find a similar "Ceramic high heat coating" somewhere within a reasonable distance.

Just out of curiosity, could you PM me your postal code. I am interested in what it would actually cost to ship to your location.

Initial testing reveals more power, more torque, less boost, better boost control, lower underhood temperatures (as much as 400*+ surface temperature reduction!), better spool, better looks, ~15lb weight reduction and many more smiles from the loose nut behind the steering wheel

Image
See increases in WHP/WTQ, smoother boost pressure curve. Slightly slower spool in green line is because Green run was done in 4th gear, red run in 3rd gear. Ignore spike in AFR in green run. Sensor probe fell out of the tailpipe.

Image
SwainTech White Lightning coating keeps everything looking pretty and running cool.

Image
F1-inspired flex bellows on wastegate dumptube (sadly, not inconel)

Image
a nice, equal merge angle.

Steve is in love with the downpipe. He was able to pass several Porsches this weekend at the track, and I think he really is getting a ton of power/tq despite being on stock injectors and stock turbo and stock intercooler!

There used to be a company here in Canada that produced a tuned, lighter exhaust manifold for the Isuzu engine. They used to sell them on eBay and, as is usually the case, when I tried to look them up the other day they weren't around anymore. Have you given any thought to fabricating a lighter, tuned version of the manifold? Also, I currently have a PCE installed and the first thing I noticed was that power was available sooner and the turbo spooled faster much like what you're reporting with your setup. I wonder if what you've created is any better that what I've got now. I've wanted to take the manifold off and have it JetHot coated for some time now. This could be on its own, with the downpipe or as part of a component replacement like the one you've developed - thus my questions :-D

What we have made is absolutely better than a PCE. The before/after dyno plots are before, with PCE, 2.25" piper, LGM intake, everest chip and ~15psi boost pressure, and after, with our parts, coatings, 2.25" piper, LGM intake and everest chip.

~14wtq and 18whp at peak are hard to argue against. Then you have the benefits of better spool and better boost control, less heat etc.

We haven't thought about a manifold yet because the fabrication is roughly 4x what we have into the downpipe, and if we were building a new manifold, it wouldn't have an IHI flange on it anyway, we'd go for broke and put a t25 flange on to run a GT style turbo.
