NO TURBO BOOST

Postby pametz » Mon 09.07.2012, 16:32

With 35,00 mi my Elan suddenly lost power. It is making a rattling like sound from the area of the turbo. There is no boost reading. Does this sound like I need a new turbo?

:agree: If the rattling is coming from the downpipe cannister just below the turbo, it could indicate the ceramic pre-cat substrate has fractured and is now blocking the exhaust. This thread discusses hollowing the precat. Unfortunately, the pictures no longer link, but imagine the entire cannister filled with honeycomb, partially fractured and rattling into position to block the exhaust flow and you get the idea. One of the posts even indicates the ceramic substrate can be removed from underneath without even removing the cannister.

The precat is positioned so as to heat quickly and provide rapid catalytic, thus reducing cold-start emissions. It is not essential to engine operation.
