Wastegate actuator

Hi one and all
The rod on the waste gate actuator has broken.
I have removed the unit and temporarily wired the turbo linkage in the shut position to the right, (risky i know).
However when driving the car and flooring the throttle the boost gauge goes up to .5 and no higher i.e. about normal boost.
It used to go over .5 then settle back to around .6 as i believe it should. I was expecting it to go off the scale.
Do you reckon i am getting an incorrect reading poor earth or something and could still be damaging the engine or what.

I don't think it can have fully sealed. If it had you would have all the pressure going through the turbo and boost would rise uncontrollably quickly (until it hit boost cut and you headbutted the steering wheel)! So I don't think you can be doing any damage.
If only the rod has broken, my recommendation would be to take all of the pieces off and take it to a garage or engineering shop that could weld it back together. You could even get a threaded insert put in the middle so that you can adjust the length of the wastegate actuator rod, to fine-tune the adjustment.
I'm curious as to how it could break in the first place, and would want to find out why it did - it shouldn't be under any stress.
