Turbo boost

Hi,

I have just started up my Elan after a 2 year lay up in my garage. It started relatively easily once the battery was charged bot I am not sure if the turbo boost is working OK. Once warm I revved the engine hard, up to 6500 rpm. The turbo gauge jumped rapidly to about 0.5 then fell back. Keeping the revs on for about 30 seconds the turbo gauge stayed at zero.

When I was using the car regularly on the road I really never noticed what the turbo gauge was doing.

Is what I describe normal for a stationary car? Many thanks

Sounds right to me.

The turbo will only boost once the speed sensor shows that the car is moving and the revs are in the right range - the ECU controls it and needs the correct set of 'inputs' for it to boost.

There shouldnt be any boost on a stationary vehicle, whatever the revs.

Dave is correct - there shouldn't be any boost on a stationery vehicle. Very odd

I will have to wait util I get an MOT to be able to use it on the road and properly check the boost.

My understanding is that the wastegate allows boost when there is sufficient airflow. Usually this will be when the engine is under load & the most practical way to apply load is by driving.

In that case, a short, sharp dose of WOT should provide sufficient airflow to start the turbo but without load you won't maintain it even at maximum revs. I have done this but only once... I don't have a habit of red-lining my engine while in neutral!
