Window bobbin retaining screw

Postby al » Fri 05.06.2009, 09:14

The heads on my window bobbin retaining screws are all shagged so it looks like I'm going to have to use the extractor on them [they were like that when I got there officer !], so obviously I'd like to have some replacement ones ready before I extract the old ones.

Problem is, that without taking out the old ones, I don't know what they are - the service manual shows them as being a counter sunk screw, but I'm not sure of diameter, thread pitch, or length, and the parts guide is so low res it's not very useful in this case.

Anyone happen to know this stuff ?

cheers,
a.

Hi Al
I may have some spares of these- if I can find them in the mess of other things. I'll have a look later today and get back to you.

According to the parts manual the screws are M5 x 20, not sure of the head type but you need to be careful of the small aluminium part they screw into as I believe the aluminium part is expensive for what it is. I would just drill the head off and once it is all apart carefully remove the screw from the alloy bit.

:agree:

I've been there - the reason the screws are chewed up is because they have bound to the aluminium tapping plate...

You need to be planning to replace the tapping plate aswell as the screws...... Sorry... :(

I have found the bobbins- now need to identify the screws.

it may be possible to use these
http://www.screwfix.com/prods/14216/Bol ... Pack-of-50
depends on the head fitting inside of the bobbin, the head will be 8.5mm dia and being stainless will not rust.

I seem to recall it needs to be a countersunk screw.

It's also important that the screw dosent protrude through the tapping plate, as then they'll foul the door crash beam...

So they are M5 x 20 countersunk if that is the case next time I am at my local bolt suppliers I'll pick up a handful of stainless ones as I have the pasengers window to sort out.

I found it was impossible to remove the screws from the aluminium without buggering up the aluminium bit so I used these http://nextday.diy.com/app/jsp/product/ ... ctId=65152

I tried the screwfix ones as-well but they have plastic parts which I figured wouldn't screw up as tight

As Grodon quite rightly said - there is very little clearance between the door beam and the glass - so bolts didn't seem to be an option (or at least I couldn't find any at the time)

I seem to remember I had to cut the end off the male bit so it clamped the bobbin, and used a stainless steel washer to spread the weight of the socket against the glass. I also held the socket end in place on the glass with some silicone adhesive - crude but it worked.

As a work around I think Gordon's solution was quite a good one see viewtopic.php?f=8&t=14717&p=195246#p195246
