Replacing driver's window seal

Postby jecuk » Mon 24.04.2006, 08:44

Hi. I was wondering how difficult/costly replacing the rubber seal at the base of the driver's side window on the outside of the car is? With a split, presumably there is a risk that water could enter the door cavity. Is the part costly?

Thanks in advance?

It's very difficult, I'm afraid. I don't think it's possible without window removal.
The part itself is a little over £40.00 but that's the easy bit...

Darren will confirm (he's the door meister).

Lotus quoted me just over £70 for this part last month.

Mmm, inflation! My figure was based on my purchase from PMs about 3 years ago.

See above (Darren's post) for confirmation of the job's complexity.

Thanks. Doesn't sound simple at all. I am looking at a car that has this problem. Am I correct in saying that not having an intact weatherstrip could create longer term problems with water penetration?

Not really, they all tend to allow water ingress.
The original seals harden and crack over time. Mine are awful, but I haven't been that concerned or I'd have done the job by now.
The window regulator is a sealed unit and the speakers should have the world famour Lotus waterproofing system (plastic bag) over them!

If you've read all the guidance on this board about what to do and look for when buying an Elan and this is your only concern with the car you're looking at, Id say you were doing well.
You could also use it as bargaining power. £70.00 parts and 3 hrs labour (@£45.00/hr) + VAT per side etc...

completely agree. Just wanted to understand the situation. Lurking on this board for quite a while, I have gathered that it is the little things that can get you with an Elan!

Can't wait until I can join your ranks!
