A post seals

Postby hatters » Sun 22.04.2012, 18:27

I have decided to take the bull by the horns and have a go at fixing the windows on my Elan ,there is plenty of tips on how to do it on this forum so that shouldn't be too much of a problem he said tongue in cheek ,the nearside window has never worked since I purchased the car and you have to help the O/S one up by giving it a pull at the back because it is on the skew when you try to lift it with the switch and consequently jams
The main reason for this post is that I want to have a go at replacing the A POST seals at the same time .Would you believe the guy I purchased the Elan off tried to make them waterproof with white sealant yes you read it right white sealant and it was a right mess I removed it all and used some black sealant but it still looks bodged ,How do these two seals come off I cant sea any fixing screws ,do the inner A post covers have to come off first and are they available from Lotus or S and J sports cars
I would appreciate it if one of you guys on here can tell me how to remove them

Hatters they are held in with sikkaflex, with lots of gentle persuasion you can get them out whole but if you are replacing then rip em out, then you can remove the rails to clean them as you will see the screws or just replace them in situ. sikkaflex 221 is the stuff to fit the new ones. Sj did have them or lotus had them back in stock. About £80 per side afik

Did mine last year and its easy to do but messy

No problem if your near essex happy to help do them. A little tip i learned is to put clingfilm over any sikkaflex especially where the hood meets etc before it sets and it will set without sticking to anything you dont want it too :D you can just peel it off after. I used some on the top of the door seal at the rear where it goes under the hood as they had torn, and i put some clingfilm over the top left it shut for a day and now it works perfect :D
