Odd starting

Hi all, I'm a new owner of a S2, number 493 in Norfolk mustard which is generally in great condition. Have to say I've been loving driving it in the good weather over the Easter school holidays. However I've noticed that quite often when I start the car from warm/hot, it takes quite a while for the engine to start, (well, relatively, probably no more than 3 or 4 seconds in reality) - sort of starts gradually a bit like a steam engine. I seem to remember an old mate's SE was the same. Is it a case of 'they all do that', or does it indicate a potential problem perhaps? Thanks.

Interesting question! The answer is, I think, 'yes' to both!!! On this forum there has previously been discussion which suggests that ignition is not immediate on turnover, taking a few cranks before it fires up, however your description seems a little different I suggest that you check your plugs and gaps as a first easy check

Do you tend to wait a second or two after the dashboard lights come on before cranking? It needs a little time for everything to initialise.

Hi Mike, my 1992 Elan SE has a similar issue. Normally when cold, mine starts pretty much immediately. When hot it sometimes does the same but sometimes cranks for what seems a long time, maybe 3-4 seconds. Stamping on the gas pedal normally reduces the time. I've not spent too much time worrying about it as I've also been told it's a common issue with ther Elan and mine has never let me down (though it is a bt embarrasing sometimes). My guess is that its either fuel or ignition system as it's only a intermittent issue under hot conditions. I'm also in Essex so would be happy to compare cars to see if we do indeed have the same issue, let me know.

Mine started like a tractor the other week......
It's been SORNed since October but started regularly......

i checked plugs, leads, coil pack and connections.....on inspection I found blocked injectors...
Whiz through the sonic cleaner bath and good as new.....

The problem with SORNing a car is the degredation of the fuel.....I probably had crap sucked in too as the car had less thank 1/4 of a tank........just a thought
