crank pulley bolt

got the elan at garage getting new cam belt / kit (and other belts) on anyhow hes having problems getting crank pulley bolt loose
now we all know they tight but any tips.
he should manage im just trying to look ahead and see why or whats up

and want car back all prim and proper

I have read something about that on here I think, one guy said he put a socket and wrench on it and wedged it under the car on a large piece of timber then turned the engine with the ignition key ,so they must be bloody tight .
I suggest you try and find the thread to see exactly what he did before you take my word for it , I thought it sounded a bit drastic , but it does work viewtopic.php?f=33&t=20336#p259344

When you come to crack the pulley nut... fit the space saver to the front right and turn the steering fully right.

By doing this you'll have a straight drive over the top of the tyre and you can steady the whole thing on the wheel. In addition you can also you put an extension bar through a lightening hole within the wheel, the extension bar will react against the calliper and lock the wheel.

I tried all sorts of methods and this one worked for me.

You could even grab a mate to put his foot on the brake, engine not running obviously.

The nut broke at 500 Nm...Chuffing tight.

As for a tool to undo the engine bracket I use a modified 5/16th (8mm) oil socket.

This one keeps coming up, we have found a long breaker bar wedged against the frame and a tap of the starter will pop it loose.

With my car an extension of 1,5 meters and 80 kilo's at the end, pulsating! ... A lot more than 500

so im going for car tomorrow and looking for another decent garage to see if they can get it sorted..

i know this might be a strange question ...and would think a lotus mechanic should know

Nope, it's standard thread.

Lefty loosy, righty tighty...

It's fustratingly simple to crack, but you just require the tools to do it....

don't be amazed if your mechanic snaps 1/2" drives,extentions and sockets...3/4" or larger is the way forward.

Yep, i snapped one 1/2" drive 10" extension bar when i did mine - so considered a 3/4" bar, but went for a Halfords professional 1/2" extension insted - it was much cheaper, and with a lifetime warranty I didn't care if that one snapped aswell (but it didn't).

update..
yep he's tried the lot just cant get enough turn until next biting point to get it off.
i have another few people who might have some other ideas but i'm been fussy as i don't like just any garage, always like a good recommended mechanic
someone to trust
theres a place at whitley bay i hear ??

and .... while the cars been up there mine and others got peppered with over spray off another factory ... painting the roof on a windy day
covered approx 30 cars so there's a claim going in, looks like im polishing all sunday after my photos of the paint specks

Interestingly, I've had to create a bracket each time because each of the cars have different spacings between the pulley and the engine mount (probably due to a different 'set' in the other engine mount).

Top tip!

I've done that, made a bracket from 3 mm stainless.
Unfortunately it folded like paper when i used it then the bolts sheared

both types of tool bracket i have seen look really good
so i will be making one soon
this seems to be a real pain in the lotus workshop
but i have just read the posts / links and well worth it

One technique the Red necks in the US use is to stuff the #1 cylinder with 2,000 lb (5/16") nylon rope after removing the spark plug. Slowly bring the engine up under compression and bingo, it stops. Put a good sized breaker bar on the crank bolt and give it a reef. Comes loose every time.

Then back the crank back and pull the rope out. Should still be able to back the bolt out completely without further help. I have placed a socket and ratchet on one of the crank pulley bolts to prevent the crank from turning further after the intial break loose, and that seems to work fine for getting the crank bolt out.
