That would be great if you could pull the plug with and without the engine running to see if a CEL come on

you just need to find the RHFHC

What the hell is a RHFHC :?

Ahh... perhaps I should have read my earlier posts in this thread
I was getting code 13 (O2 sensor open loop).
For information about the wiring stuff, check out the wiki...

Can someone please tell me the colour of the wire which takes the output voltage from the O2 sensor. This is on the 3 wire plug which is just behind the offside headlamp RHD.
Is it the brown with a yellow band? Mine has had the plug cut off so its not obvious. The other two are one black and one grey (or perhaps light blue). Car is 91 SE.
I intend to fit my closed loop Everest in the next few days.

Originally I had a problem in about 1994 with the error code for O2 sensor which reduced me to the normal 4K revs - I know this doesn't make sense, but my son spliced in
an O2 sensor and I had no more problems.

Thanks in advance (I hope)

I _think_ when I did my wiring the black was earth.

The colour codes are:

B : Black
G : Green
K : Pink
LG : Light green
N : Brown
O : Orange
P : Purple
R : Red
S : Slate
U : Blue
W : White
Y : Yellow

And here's a circuit diagram. Not sure if it'll help though, because as I recall nothing in there corresponded usefully to the colours on the car.
I'll check later and let you know...

Can some body explain to me what is open loop and closed loop in layman's terms plz

and the pros and cons also, thanks... :smt017

ASHM,

Many thanks for the reply. It would seem likely that the brown/yellow wire takes the feed from the sensor.
I can check if I am getting an input voltage on the non black wire for heating the sensor.

If I unplug the O2 sensor when the car is running should there be an error code? as were not getting an engine light :? Just testing to see if everything is up and running ok as there was talk that the O2 sensor shouldn`t be fitted without there being a live signal :?

How long had the engine been running?
It runs open loop for about 2 minutes before switiching to closed. Only then will the CEL light up if it is receiving an out-of-range (or no) signal from the O2 sensor.
If you restart the engine, it resets this 2 minute delay.

BB, open loop means that you have various sensors, air/fuel adjustment mechanisms, timing, etc. on the intake side of the engine but only limited ways of knowing how well that works in the engine and no knowledge of what comes out in the exhaust. Closed loop measures what is coming out of the engine (exhaust) and then feeds that output data back to the ECU which uses the data to modify the input settings forming a the loop with the engine in the middle.

Open (No) Loop:

ECU > input adjustment > engine > exhaust

Closed Loop:

and the pros and cons also, thanks... :smt017

Closed loop attempts to keep the air/fuel ratio nailed at an optimal 14.7:1 which should result in better emission levels and fuel economy. I don't know of a downside.

Another sensor is an extra possible source of failure.

A minor drawback IMO.
Not all Elans have the wiring to run an O2 sensor. Mine doesn't :?

Thanks for that Rippers, Dico did tell me that you had texted him.

Thats the best thing about LEC, is that there is still plenty to learn on the M100 :-D

& he texted me back today to say the CEL still does not come on after 5 minutes with the sensor disconnected.
I am at a loss to explain this. :?

Just fitted the Everest. It took about 25 mins. A short test run after allowing it to warm up and smiles all round.
Will test it tomorrow mid morning when the roads are quieter using elanscan. I want to see if I'm getting the 14.7
mixture as my excuse for fitting it was the MOT.

Thanks for the help given everyone.

Dunno why the CEL doesn't come on. Suggest you (or monty) post 2 elanscan logs: 1 with the o2 connected and 1 without the O2 connected.

Some barsteward with more time than sense might offer an opinion.

hi folks, i have just done the conversion using a 3 wire sensor off a renault kango, all seems to be ok, i had to hacksaw the plastic plug off leaving the bullets on which seem to be the right size, luckily the other end of the harness plug was plugged into the harness i dont know if all se's are like this. i then just put the wires in the right plug holes and put the 1499 chip in. no engine light on so i presume all is ok. got the sensor off ebay used for 99p, makes it a cheap upgrade :)

Would I be right in thinking that the only reason for not using one of the many three wire O2 sensors on ebay is that they don't have the right plug connector? Do they all have the same thread and electrical properties?

Thanks

As long as there's no RED wire included in the 3 wire's you're OK.
You could check if it works on the same principle / materials. As i've been told 90% use the same principleand wiring colours don't matter (as long as it's not red)
The heater circuit has usually 2 wires of the same colour (as it works both ways :D ) and the signal's got a different colour. Ground comes from the housing, so give the tread & flange a good clean before installing!. Don't use lubricants other than already applied on the sensor thread from factory as some ingredients can kill the active element in the sensor :poke:

I wish i've bought one from Ebay. Much cheaper than mine, but hey... no instant happiness :-)
