Which heater valve did you buy. I looked in wicki but that part number does not appear to be current, and the volvo 740 heater valves on ebay all seem to be for air con cars. My car is without air con. Does this matter?

Yep...I looked at wiki, saw 'Volvo 740' (thanks for that info Fredjohn) and looked for the best deal for one of those on eBay

In fact I think I read somewhere that the 760/740 series plastic heater valves were the same and found this for £22-40.

After seeing how close to catastrophe I was with the original metallic item I definitely wanted a replacement made from plastic!

That's good news , but don't forget that mid-pipe join has a metal insert, too, and is likely to be just as manky...
