Engine problems

Your advice requested.

After 5 trouble free years with my S2 (~70000 miles) I've had a couple of issues recently.

First lost power (while overtaking up a hill) - engine staggered and engine warning light came on. It didn't happen again and everything seemed fine.

A few weeks but only a couple of trips later I drove 200 miles with no problems - then parked for maybe 4 hours - on return the car would not start. Engine turned over (and over and over) - no sign of catching really. No lights and nothing problematic once it did start - drove back the 200 miles and was fine.

I wondered whether this might be early signs of the cam angle sensor going (based on a hazily remembered read of posts) but I've not tried to really track it down.

I've had a sense of the car being a bit down on power but I don't know if that's real or just reflects the lunatic way that so many others drive these days and how much more powerful modern cars are (though I would not swap!).

Much appreciate any thoughts. I do have Elanscan but not run it in a while and it was reluctant to work last time I tried so might take some attention.

Loads of possibilities, but my experiences would lead me to look at fuel pressure as the cause first, can you hear the pump priming when you turn the ignition?

I started her up - no problem of course but I couldn't hear the pump (which is probably not quite knowing what to listen for and being in a tight garage).

I'll get out for a run over the weekend and see if anything shows up again.

I was thinking fuel when it staggered and would not start - if only there was a carb I might have had an idea what to do....

You mentioned in the first post that the engine warning light came on and then went out, however if that occurred I believe it will have stored a code for that failure and that should be the first point of testing by accessing the diagnostics via the paperclip method if you haven't already

I read the first sentence of your post and thought Cam Angle Sensor!

My CAS failed as you describe.

Have you checked the wastegate isn't stuck? Wouldn't cause the starting problem but the others could be.
