How to crank engine without starting?

Postby atikovi » Tue 15.11.2016, 23:17

If it hasn't been run in a while I like to crank it a few seconds to build up oil pressure. What is the best way besides pulling the plugs wires?

if you activate the fuel cut-off inertia switch before turning the key to light up the dashboard, then there shouldn't be any fuel getting to the injectors.

That said, there will still be some from last time it ran, but not enough to run very long (or very well!).

For future, it is worth activating the switch before turning off the car so it uses up any remaining petrol (gas!) in the fuel lines...

....oh, and if your memory is anything like mine, put a note on the instrument panel to remind you to switch it back on when you can't start it a few months later!!!

Otherwise, simple unplugging the CAS/ignition wiring will mean it gets no spark (but could lead to other problems with bad connections in the future if done regularly).

There are probably other fuses you can easily remove to prevent the ignition system from firing, but I'd do the inertia switch as it's easy. (on a UK SE anyway - not sure about the FED ones as to how accessible it is).

Just the one now, but this one's mine! - and it will be finished eventually..... - but also temporary custodian of a project until it is finished enough for Angie to drive it

...oh, and a 2006 Freelander destined for the jungles of The Gambia - 4500 miles across roads, desert and tracks - what could possibly go wrong?

Pull the fuel pump fuze (A3) - top row, middle 7.5A (red) fuze.

Pulled the 10A ECM fuse. That should prevent spark as well as fuel injection.
