Oil Analysis Breakdown

Hello all,

Thought some of you may be interested in something like this...whenever I do an oil change on any of my vehicles, I capture some oil and send it in for an analysis, making sure to give specific details about viscosity, mileage, etc. Got my first one back since owning my Elan, and I'm happy to read their analysis. My hypothesis about my injectors needing replacement may be true as well, according to % of fuel in the oil (still getting poor mileage).

Yes FunElan, you were suspecting excess fuel problems in your parallel post shown by some ElanScan irregularities.

Imo it's a bit expensive to throw money at a set of new injectors - but it can't hurt to clean them, I suppose.

I'm no expert but I think I'd be inclined to remove that chip first (or - tall order - try a different ecu entirely, if you can...) and ElanScan it to see if that 'cleans up' the fuelling before spending out on 'wrangling' injectors. Is there an injector cleaner you can try to see if it'll improve the situation, I wonder?

Hey Chris - luckily I already bought some injectors a while back to have in "inventory" . They also weren't terribly expensive, $170: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Set-of-4-BRAND ... 1637275013

I saw someone had reported using these and they worked well. I've already tried 2 different injector cleaners. The chip makes the car more FUN, and it seems that people here still get decent mileage even with the chip and an aftermarket exhaust/intake. I already have the closed loop ECU, so not sure what changing that will do, but perhaps I can disconnect the battery (it's 7 years old, maybe change it) and reset the ECU. I bet that hasn't been done since the last battery was installed.

I'm unsure as to which chip I have, and it doesn't seem that ElanScan reports that. I am scared to open up the ECU to look, never attempted that before!

Hi FunElan. When I mentioned 'change ecu' I meant try a different one (from a pal, say) that you know works okay...

It's easy to look into the ecu - just undo these three cover bolts when you've got it out.
I found the difficult bit was to remove the multiplugs in order to get it out- especially since they hadn't been touched for 30-odd years - involving lot's of prising of those blue bits with plastic trim tools
If you're going to disconnect the battery anyway, it'd make it worthwhile to remove the ecu cover and find out what chip you have?
