Is there any definitive guides for engine out/in?

I am looking to get my engine replaced and wondered if there is a definitive guide out there anywhere which I could give to whoever does it?
I have seen a selection of video's by Matt Nesbitt on U-tube that look quite comprehensive.
There is a thread on Engine Removal on the Engine thread which goes into some detail.

Any thoughts please?

I just used the workshop manual, which you can download from the Manuals section in the top nav bar (when logged in).
The only thing I'd add is that I was a bit blasé about the clamshell since mine wasn't in the best condition at that time. It can be done without hitting the clam shell, but you have to use a leveller and be very slow/careful.
If you have access to a lift, I think Saltire found success with taking it out from below too.

The first time I did it, I used the Workshop Manual procedure on it's own.....

... the next time I 'remembered' some bits were able to be done differently (but only once I'd got to them!)

Last time I just dived in and did it without looking at the books - it isn't really much different to any other car.

The parts which required some thought were things like the rear gearbox mounting arm, and I still don't know if it's worth undoing one end , the other, or both, or splitting it!!!!

Clearly, the engine will not separate from the gearbox with the gearbox in situ, so it needs to come out as a unit (or the gearbox on it's own from the bottom, then lift the engine)..... so remember to drain the gearbox oil before removing the driveshafts.

Otherwise, there is no great mystery to it.

Why didn't I think of the Workshop manual??! Im assuming that the workshop manual and service manual are one and the same or do I need to download one?

Dapinky, thanks for the advice, I note the points about the gearbox in situ and draining the oil first and rear gearbox mounting arm.

I will pass this on to the mechanic.

Following Matt’s comment, I did take my engine out from the bottom. However, I had the driveshafts and most of the suspension out for a refresh anyway, so it was pretty straightforward to leave the car on the ramp, disconnect everything, and raise the car, leaving the engine/box on a stand. We already had all the fluids drained by that time, and ISTR we took engine and box out as a unit, splitting them later. I know I did split them, because I remember replacing the clutch as a piece of advisable scope creep.

I suspect it probably doesn’t make a lot of difference in terms of time and swear box contributions whichever way you do it

I'd agree...but if a mechanic is doing the work, do they hand you a bill for the swear box too?

I guess so. After all, they hand you a bill for everything else: environmental disposal, flushing oil, protective seat covers, unlocking the car . . .
