sump removal

Postby Mike_H » Tue 01.11.2005, 06:33

Stevo,
I've just removed my sump and I took this photo of the big bolt that you will have to remove along with a few smaller bolts to take the black guard off the gearbox.

Mike.

Stevo,

doesn't answer your question but I had a holed sump. Was in kenny B's 2 weeks ago and he welded it up in situ, reckoned it was a damn site easier than removing it.

Interesting: I was worried when I first got the car that the sump was vulnerable on the atrocious roads in rural Kent; no-one else seemed to have a problem, but after touching the road once or twice I fitted a crude sump-guard (angle-iron!). Ten minutes on a ramp, and twelve months' peace of mind, so far.

David, My mechanic had the same problem with a previous Elan, apparently the sump is double skinned, lotus must have known it was vulnerable. So yours is now triple skinned

Yes I am affraid the clutch cover does have to come off, I have just done my S2 fortunately I also had removed the Prongerone (engine under frame T shaped) which made the job very easy. By the way removing and re fitting the prongerone is very easy also.

Good Luck.

One thing I have always wondered, is if you get a holed sump by a speed bump when travelling at the posted speedlimit, can you get it back off the highway department or council (depending upon ownership) if the car has not had any part of the suspension modified. As the risk of engine destruction is seconds away from any major hole to the sump, its always worrying when going over the bumps!

I believe speed ramps are only supposed to be a certain height, & i think its 80mm. I do know a neighboor who had his exhaust damaged on a speed ramp & the local council did compensate him, coincidently it wasn't long before that particular speed ramp was altered !

I heard speed bumps were 5" which ties in with your metric 80mm Paul.

I will ask the question, i know someone who works in planning, although knowing this country, different councils will have different rules. Will let you know !

Stevo, yup, need to take the prongerone off, which is another reason why KB didnae remove my sump, sorry should have mentioned that, thought you knew it.

Monty, point taken, I must have been sleeping. Though I stick with my 5" / 125mm bumps, have you ever seen one as low as 80mm (80mm is what your pam and 5 sisters get a grip of  :poke: - it must be true cos Dico told me  )

Not that it makes ant difference, but prongeron has no E on the end.

Dont worry about removing and re fitting the prongeron its really easy!

Six bolts and its off. As long as you have all of the front of the car off the ground the raft's stay in place and you slot it back in. Exhaust down pipe was already off my car that could be something else to be removed you might just get away with it but I doubt it.

He would if he'd check all the threads...

Looks like Stevo's got it...and that mount is a bugger if you attach the thing in the wrong order after say a transmission removal. Not that I'd know or anything...
