Difference between Cooleant temp and MAT?

Postby XiPHiAS » Sat 28.02.2009, 21:22

Anyone can explain me the difference of the Cooleant temp and the MAT temp?

I like to do some tests allround the intake to make the intake better...

EDIT

After some research i've noticed that cooleand temp is the temperature of the coolingwater...
So I think MAT will be the intake temperature?

Xiphias,
According to this site I found,
MANIFOLD AIR TEMPERATURE (MAT) SENSOR. Mounted on the intake manifold, this sensor changes resistance to monitor incoming air temperature. The sensor's input is used to adjust the fuel mixture for changes in air density. Problems with the manifold air temp sensor can affect the air/fuel mixture, causing the engine to run rich or lean.

COOLANT SENSOR. Usually located on the cylinder head or intake manifold, the coolant sensor is used to monitor the temperature of the engine coolant. Its resistance changes in proportion to coolant temperature. Input from the coolant sensor tells the computer when the engine is warm so the PCM can go into closed loop feedback fuel control and handle other emission functions (EGR, canister purge, etc.) that may be temperature dependent. The coolant sensor is a pretty reliable sensor, but if it fails it can prevent the engine control system from going into closed loop. This will result in a rich fuel mixture, excessive fuel consumption and elevated carbon monoxide (CO) emissions - which may cause the vehicle to fail an emissions test. A bad sensor can be diagnosed by measuring its resistance and watching for a change as the engine warms up. No change, or an open or closed reading would indicate a bad sensor.

ElanScan can be used to spot Coolant temperature sensor problems.

Ok :-)

Does the Elan has a Air Mass Meter? (I don't now the English word for that)

I like to do some tests to see if the K&N has better airflow than the 'normal' stock airfilter. After that I like to do some tests with other solutions like an open K&N and a RAM Air Intake system like BMC.

It has a Mass Air Temperature sensor and its output is given as MAT in ElanScan. The ECU interprets the temperature reading as air density => air mass.

Xiphias,
I think you mean a Mass Flow Meter. Again from the site I quoted above:
MASS AIRFLOW SENSOR (MAF). Mounted ahead of the throttle body on multiport fuel injected engines, the MAF sensor monitors the volume of air entering the engine. The sensor uses either a hot wire or heated filament to measure both airflow and air density.

And the Elan doesn't have one. The flow is just calculated from the RPM I think.

found that allready, thx for help ... !!!
Is there a manual available for the ElanScan? If some people are intrested I' intrested to start somthing like that?

I did some runs today with my Mountain swicher and ElanScan, i'm analysing them and will post all data realy soon.
