ok, all i have for this is ,well, an Elan SE

so, what i think i need is:

a laptop

an interface cable

a copy of elanscan

Is there anything else i will need or would that be sufficient???

Mick,

Yes, that's it. If your pc has a serial (9 pin D type) connection then I can flog you an interface for £15 + P&P now. If you need a USB interface then you'll have to wait a bit.

Be warned, if you get stick for talking to your Elan mates with your computer now, just wait until you start talking to your car!:-D

i'd love to take you up on that offer Geoff, but unfortunately my computer, although it does indeed have a serial 9 pin port, also has a rather large monitor, keyboard, mous AND desk attached to it

however, i will keep you in mind when i manage to source a lappy i can borrow for a while

or if my lotto tickets come in tonight!!!

ok, old thread but i'm very new to this.
i'm looking for a laptop to run elanscan. i have been offered this -

Have a laptop Dell C400

P3 1.2ghz
12" LCD
768mb ram
40gb harddisk

Running winxp with no problems and has a rs-232 port. No built in cd-rom as its an "ultra portable". Battery life about 1 hour."

P3 running on Windows XP with 768mb Ram? is this lappy up for the job?

That should do very nicely. Elanscan takes very little computing power. I run ElanScan under Windows 2000 on an ancient 266MHz Pentium III Toshiba laptop with 256 MB memory and a 20GB HDD, a USB 1.0 port and the appropriate cable. It works just great on that silly little machine so should work very well on what you describe.
