I've got an intermittent tickover issue - car drives fine, gauges all seem normal, but wont always drop back to tickover.
Sometimes sticks around 1.5 ~ 2k, sometimes slowly falls back to 1k ish, sometimes behaves fine.
This is just a quick scan, not playing up anywhere near as bad as it does sometimes, although failed to get tickover below 1k, and quite a few times didnt drop back below 1500.

If anyone's got a minute to cast an eye over the log, please do so, and let me know what you think?

I haven't, no and I will;

I have checked for sticking throttle cable, and that throttle is returning fully - that all seems ok. The problem is clearly intermittent though, and possibly worse when cold, although I'm unconvinced at the moment...

Same problem as me Gordon - thermostat sticking open. Plot the coolant temperature and target idle and you'll see what I mean.

New Mini 82c stat fitted (not a drop of coolant lost thanks to the VAX)

Took it up to temp and round the block - seems fine - I'll do a cold scan at the weekend.

One thing I did notice, the run-on water pump ran for alot longer than it ever has done before... cutting in, and out... almost 15 minutes before it stopped!

Hard to judge if the dashboard gauge was sitting higher than usual!

ok, first chance to do a log since the new stat;
problem unchanged..
In the log attached, target idle once warm is 950;
as far as I can see, the car never achived this, the best being 1025..

The car is idleing from 270sec ~ finish, initially at 1025...
I blipped the throttle at 366.3 sec, and then the idle refused to drop below 1225...

Ideas anyone?

I checked it the other day, doing nothing more than putting in a paperclip and seeing if the tickover changed - and it didn't; however just tried it now (warm engine), and the tickover went up slightly;

Warm engine under ECU control was idling at 1k, putting in paperclip took it up only a fraction to about 1050rpm;

This prompted me to try adjusting the idle screw, only to find it it needed to go in nearly 2 turns to get the idle down to 950?

Now, paperclip in, I've got 950, paperclip out (ecu control) it goes up to about 1100?!

I'll get it hot on the drive home, and see what happens!!

To be fair, the idle screw did seem "loose".. so this my be the problem...

Are the vacuum lines all sound? A perished, cracked rubber line can intermittently open up and cause the idle to go up.

Scan seems fine other than the revs never get down to target idle, so I think that tickover setting is the likely problem Gordon.

I had a leak at the PCV valve to valvecover connection. The rubber grommet that fits into the VC
was old and hard. Since fitting the new one it seems fine the little that I've run it..
