newbie elanscan upset

Hi Elanscanners.

Help! I'd like to be confident like you with 'elanscan' but I've just tried it for the first time with the right com port and latency of '1' and I'm getting, even after re-start etc:-

I don't 'arf feel stoopid Is there something I've missed? I started the engine - before you ask

My lead enabled me to get into 'service mode' and get 1flash/2flash and when switched to 'elanscan mode' the reg/green leds flashed on the usb plug but I didn't see a blue led at the ALDL plug. Afaik I loaded up properly and used the correct FDTI drivers.

My first thought is to wipe off and reload completely since it nearly works but I'm wondering if any guru can suggest a simple fix so's I can say 'I nearly got it going but I haven't seen how it should work' in order to to salvage my ego

When this happened to me, I just switched the Comm ports around until it worked.

Now interpreting the results of the scan...that's another animal.

Hi Chris,

Did you follow the instructions that I put on the 'Manuals' website? (It pertains to W10, but it should work with earlier versions down to Wxp).

It looks like you may not have the latency set, as the screenshot shows it at 200ms.

Yep tried switching comm ports around...

Latency set up as '1' but 'Acq Period' stays at 200ms and 'Update period' stays as 2000ms

I must confess to not looking at wiki site but followed interface supplier instructions...

But I promise I will when I have another go tomorrow...

I'll get fresh downloads, tho', first 'just in case'

It's not on the Wiki site, it's on my 'Manuals' site (link from the tab at the top of this page).... it has all the 'idiots guide' type of instructions (with pics), and all the drivers and files you need for a complete install.

Edit: followed (Idiot's) Guide and I get these screens...

first is ign on and second is ign off. w/out engine running. Sooo...close!!! Also, 'service mode' works ok but - (I think) this merely by-passes the electronics of the interface.

(My first objective is to use elanscan to determine my PROM id so's I can be ahead of any emission problems...)

I'm suspecting the interface + vendor is sending another, so there'll be an update later I hope...

update 22/03/22: still no joy, 'test' mode gives erratic changes of highly unbelievable values - I get the impression that there's a 'newbie-and-their-whizzy-win10' curse.
ElanScan Compatibility mode doesn't go beyond win8

Hi folks I'm still a newbie and still struggling to get ElanScan to work.

It's nearly there giving random, changing, 'impossible' reads but I'm beginning to suspect that my new download of win10 - which wasn't an upgrade from win 7 - might be the culprit

I'm also aware that ElanScan is a 'legacy' offering of the same era as the peter'd-out 'Mountain Chips' and (w/out meaning to offend) get the feeling that win10 development has 'left it behind'...

I'm guessing that if ElanScan is currently working okay on your win10 application then it might be via drivers that were handed-on as the result of a win7 (which can't be resorted to now...) upgrade to win10(?)

Can anybody confirm this, please? I'd be especially interested if anyone is using 'Scan via a win10 new build 'cos that's the only option open to me as a newbie...and it's not bearing fruit atm...

ps win8 isn't supported now for new download and I suspect win8.1 will bring these same architecture changes that win10 might be guilty of - so I wonder if us 'newbies' are somewhere w/out a paddle in trying to enjoy those Elan experiences that our older siblings are currently using? (and might be blissfully unaware of...)

Thanks in advance for any flashes of inspiration - and I hope it's not down to any naivety on my part (that's happened to me recently on this forum and I'm still acutely embarrassed )

I do a clean install of W10 every year, and have always managed to set up Elanscan on my machines (I have a 10 year old Lenovo laptop and a 7 year old Acer netbook). One originally had W7, the other W8 - now both run W10 and work with Elanscan.

Chris, Did your Elanscan cable come from Geof Smith on here?

Geof only uses FTDI chips in his cables, but there are other clone-type chips which are supposed to be compatible but may give problems. See Here for details.

That said, you could try the latest drivers for the FTDI chip here: https://ftdichip.com/drivers/vcp-drivers/

I have W10 upgraded from a previous version rather than a clean install. Elanscan works fine (Geof's cable).

Hey thanks folks. Seems it's not a win10 problem as suspected then. I'll keep trying and make a start by reloading 'Scan + drivers, especially...

YYEEEESSSSS. ElanScan is up-and-running reliably (but please don't ask me how...) I didn't download anything new, just kept pluggin'-and-playin'-and-cussin'
