First use of Elanscan

Postby Rose Royce » Wed 06.07.2022, 21:43

The car has been running fine since taking it out this spring. I drove to a coffee shop one morning, and when I started it after breakfast it was misfiring, and felt that it was only running on 3 cylinders. I could not see anything obviously wrong in the engine compartment, so I drove it home.
I checked the spark plugs, and they were obviously very old and dirty, so I decided it would be a good idea to replace them. That seemed to improve the situation, but not by much. The spark plug wires looked tired, so I replaced them, and that also seemed to help but not enough. It seems that cylinder #4 is not firing. I had some new spare coils, so I decided to go ahead and replace the coils...no improvements.
I do have an Elanscan interface, and tried to get a code earlier but could not get an error code, but I have to say I am not an expert with it. I also tried the paper clip method, but its keeps repeating the 1-2 code which is the no engine fault code. The check engine light never did come on throughout this whole process. Here is a link to the log downloaded from the Elanscan : https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/ ... sp=sharing .
According to my mechanic, all of the injectors are getting power and seem to be working, but for some reason the car is misfiring. He feels that one injector is not receiving the "signal" to inject the fuel. When I read about similar problems on the forum, some point to the hall effect sensor as the potential problem, but I don't want to just keep adding new parts because I cannot find a fault code.
Any guidance from some of you with more experience would be appreciated.

Can’t help with elanscan but have you checked the injectors. I had a similar problem, change plugs, leads, etc but ended up replacing injectors an now fine.

I doubt Elanscan will help. It will only interpret what signals the ECU is sending & receiving. Your ECU does not recognise a fault because it has not given you a code, so unless a sensor is way out but still giving a signal which could be correct (ie, the temp sender is telling it -20c when it is 20c outside), you will be unlikely to get any useful data from it.
Spark plugs & injectors are wired in pairs: plugs are paired by cylinders 1&4, 2&3. Injectors are 1&3, 2&4. If one is not getting a signal, it should be breaking the circuit & pulling its pair down too.
There is something very easy you can try. With the engine idling, you should be able to hear the injectors tick as they fire. You will need a long screwdriver with one end touching an injector & the other end to your ear. If one is sticky or failing, you should hear a difference between that & the other 3.
