Elanscan on Chrome OS Flex?

Postby donsladek » Wed 24.04.2024, 15:49

Since Microsoft is ending support for Windows 10 next year, and my hardware doesn't meet their requirements for Windows 11, I'm wondering if moving to Chrome OS Flex is viable for use with Elanscan.

Any techies tried it or have any thoughts?

Thanks!

you may find that techies have an habit of folowing the moto "if it aint broke, dont fix it"
i use elanscan on my laptop. that laptop is used mostly in the garage to play music, google for help working on the car and a little bit of light gaming (using dosbox) sure its a security asset. but theres nothing in it related to my bank. I dont see myself upgrading it until those things stop working for it.

you can always spin up a VM of a compatible OS to run elanscan. i personally hate using VMs (probably because i used them long before people knew what that meant) but most people have success with them.

I thought about using my Chromebook with ElanScan but obviously found this couldn't work.

Does it work with anything else or is it only Windows 10 ?

Hi Simon,
ElanScan runs on pretty much any Windows since Windows XP. If your hardware will not run Windows 11, I guess running ElanScan will be the least of your problems. In any case you could keep an old Laptop with Win7 or Win10 just for ElanScan or use a virtual machine for this job, as Tuga suggested.

However, if you really want to move away from Windows, I am hopeful that ElanScan will run on Linux+Wine. „Wine“ runs Windows programs on Linux without relying on Microsoft. So if you cannot run Windows 11 on your hardware, you could move to Linux and should be able to run ElanScan on it until the end of time. I say „should“ because I have not actually tried it - however this will most likely work.

Cheers

Or ALDLScan can be used with a Bluetooth interface on Android phones and tablets, not as feature rich as ElanScan but handy to view live data and can log data in CSV format so MS Excel can be used to display logged files.
