Short Notice

Postby nicowalker1 » Thu 17.07.2025, 15:42

I like to leave things until the last minute... I am attending a track day on Monday so thought I would just do a quick scan.
I reset the timing to 16degrees, reset the idle. The car now feels even slower than before.
Here is a quick scan of a short run, any chance any of you experienced elan scanners can cast your eyes over it for any values that look incorrect?
Or can anyone send me a 'good' scan to compare?

My car is an SE but with the closed loop upgrade and 1499 chip (I don't think it has any additional boost programmed which my scan verifies)

The two observations I have made against a couple of other files:
My block learn Idle/Run values are higher (I have no idea what this one is)
Co pot/CA EGR volts are lower

nicowalker1 here's a 2-min run-up EScan from cold to be getting on with 'til something better comes along. I have others but this is my own 'reference'.

Mine's a '90 SE with 1499 upgrade like yours and seems to be running okay. Hope this helps...

Brilliant, thank you!

Something else I noticed, when setting the timing there is a very slight fluctuation of the timing.
When funds allow, I am going to replace the injectors and fuel filter to see if this fixes the issue. Coils, leads and plugs have already been replaced.

Erm...I agree with your observations.
Having superimposed mine (blue) on yours (black) your spark advance seems okay for ~120s then seems to go ballistic:-

I wonder if any of our 'gurus' on here have any ideas?

...oops - just realised that mine was a stationary warm-up and it follows yours quite well, until you start moving...

I have ordered another timing light to verify the accuracy of the one I have as I don't trust the adjustable dial.

ps does your spark advance always breakdown after ~120s or does it now show 'ballistic' at all times? ...oops the ballistic bit was when you started moving...

Yes I agree that in the first instance I'd be inclined to re-time it BUT I wasn't aware that you can re-set the idle; I thought the 1499 map/ecu took care of all that stuff - and we couldn't change it...

(I haven't needed to do this myself (yet) but it'd be good (certainly for me) if you posted details/pics etc when you succeed :))

the manual itslef states to set to 16 and then do timed runs to find the sweet spot.

you probably were at the sweet spot and drifted away, if you know what was the value previously, i would just put back to that.

makes me think.. maybe i should try advancing mine another degree or 2. see if theres any improvment.

Just an update following my track day yesterday. The car performed well. Elan scan shows maximum boost of 0.71.
Here is a scan from a few laps. It would be great if those in the know could have a quick look for any obvious issues if you get a chance...

Well I'm deffo NOT one that knows ... but I know enough to think you had a good time! Stuff noticed - steady rise in knock count but most coincide with a retard which suggests its working properly. Coolant temp surprising variation - especially plotted again speed or revs, not obvious why it would have cooled down after intial rise before rising again given you were basically giving it the beans when you could throughout the period. Coolant Raw is the inverse graph of Coolant Temp - presumably thats the definition of it but I've no idea what that could mean!

Nice one anyway and if it felt good it was going well. We all know when it isn't! Happy to say mine was back on top form at Combe and its just wonderful when driving in that condition. :burnout:

isnt that normal when you have a thermostat opening and closing the flow of cool coolant from the radiator initially ?
untill all the coolant in the system reaches a similar temperature, the thermostat would be creating some degree of fluctuation in the reading ?

Well I dont think so (in track conditions) but as I said...I dont really know. I had just another look at Coolant vs Revs. I'd interpret it as 3mins or so in a queue with the engine on, waiting to get on track - causes coolant temp to go very high (so thermostat well open with no cycling). Then get some revs on and do some laps. Air movement allows more cooling so temp drops despite the frequency of very high revs. The variation after that is a surprise to me - no obvious reason for it to get hotter/cooler from an engine revs perspective. I very much doubt that the thermostat would even slightly close at any point under track conditons. On the other hand the temp range is not that great so prob something much more subtle that I dont know about.

I am yet another one of those who is poor at interpretation of the ES data.......

.... but that doesn't mean I won't say anything

I think the time/engine speed/coolant is about right.

As Mike says, it is idling, and warming up, but not getting airflow.... then it gets moving and the air through the radiator cools it down...... until it gets to the point where the engine is heating the water at a faster rate than the airflow through the radiator is cooling it, so there will be a gradual climb at the sensor....... and then it's all over, and the 'cool-down' lap does what it is named for, and the airflow is now more efficient than the heat input, so the temp drops.... until the speed is down enough to go back to "insufficient" airflow - possibly back at the paddock - and the heat rises, even after the engine is off, due to heat soak from the metal bits.

It looks very dramatic on the graph, but (apart from the bit before the thermostat opens properly), there is only a 12C variation overall.

Nick, did the new reservoir cap stay sealed? and did it release any excess volume at any point?
Dave

Just the one now, but this one's mine! - and it will be finished eventually..... - but also temporary custodian of a project until it is finished enough for Angie to drive it

...oh, and a 2006 Freelander destined for the jungles of The Gambia - 4500 miles across roads, desert and tracks - what could possibly go wrong?

Thank you for the responses, chaps.

I am pleased to report that the new cap (as also found by another member) has a longer thread. No coolant was lost during the production of this data

I feel there is a tad more tweaking required with the timing. As you say, there is some knock occurring. Prior to me adjusting the timing there was absolutely no knock but the car just didn’t pull and was ‘jerky’ when letting off the throttle or just idling along at low speed. I guess it is trial and error until I find the sweet spot,
