Can you post some pics of your engine bay:

1. The bit between the coolant header tank and the engine where is says DOHC
2. The pipework at the back of the black dustbin airbox

Before you start changing the leads...If it’s still on three cylinders re-check the spark plugs. Change the ‘faulty ‘one over to a different cylinder and see if the problem follows it.

Yes I never thought of that. I suppose I could remove one lead at a time and when I remove the lead that's "missing" it won't get worse. That would narrow things down.

BTW everybody agrees the noise is my dump valve but what does the super increase in noise signify? Has my dump valve silencer fallen off!!!!!!!!!!! (only joking!)

Also, this is a thick question but what's a dump valve?

All questions here are valid (unless they are asked by Gary).

When you are on boost, the turbo is spinning and forcing air into the system, when you let go of the throttle the engine suddenly stops using the air but the turbo is still spinning and pushing air into the system. This would normally cause the turbo to stop suddenly once the intake is fully pressurised.

A dump valve is a pressure release that opens when the pressure on the intake goes higher than would normally be expected on boost, thereby releasing the air that was forced in by the turbo when the throttle is closed, and allowing the turbo to spool down naturally, without the stall.

The pics you take of the engine bay should show whether a pipe has come loose from the dump valve.

It's all fixed! Thanks very much for your help!

It turned out that the excessive dump valve noise was due to the big rubber pipe which had fallen off from the turbo input!! (How stupid not to spot that one - but is was quite a new noise so I hadn't investigated that much!)

The misfiring wasn't related to the above but was later fixed with a new set of leads from SJ Sportscars which (although a bit expensive), turned up the next day in the post so good service from them.

It was really handy that people looked at the Elanscan output as the paper clip test gave a CTS error code (perhaps it hadn't cleared from when the CTS was changed literally an hour of driving time before). This input from people saved me time going down the wrong path and messing about with the CTS.

Again thanks all, the Sun has been shining in Jersey and now the tyres and brakes are all very smelly!

It's red with peeling lacquer. You wouldn't have seen it as it's been broken down since February!
